AGI – In the workplace virtual reality can encourage participation and creativity. These, in a nutshell, are the conclusions of a study conducted by the University of Trento and published in the journal ‘Scientific Reports’. Imagine meeting colleagues and work colleagues in the so-called ‘metaverso’ for a meeting, perhaps in an environment that simulates a Caribbean beach, simply by wearing a headset, it may no longer be science fiction in a few years.
What effects could this type of digital context have on people’s minds? This was investigated by Nicola De Pisapia, professor of Psychobiology and Physiological Psychology at the Department of Psychology and Cognitive Sciences.
The general intention of the research was to compare the psychological impact on individuals of three contexts of professional interaction: online videoconferencing, in-person meetings and meetings in a three-dimensional virtual reality. Observe and then measure the effects of these different communication modes on group dynamics, cognitive performance and individual well-being. This is one of the few international scientific studies of this type.
Terna, an Italian company that deals with electricity transmission networks, was interested in the study and made employees and spaces available for it to be carried out. The investigation, in which Gregorio Macchi, from the Department of Psychology and Cognitive Sciences, who focused his degree thesis on this project, collaborated, involved around sixty people, divided into four groups.
Each of these met in a meeting room, above an online and virtual reality platform and, in each of these conditions they had to work in a team to discuss possible solutions to a problem, while a hidden observer measured different aspects of the way they interacted.
At the end of the meetings, the participants were subjected to various questionnaires to collect elements relating to the creative ability to develop innovative ideas, the degree of involvement in the requested activity, the possible stress caused by the use of the headset during the immersion in the virtual situation.
“The picture that emerged – explains De Pisapia – is not simple. There is no good and bad tool. We all know that remote offers advantages but also disadvantages. What we did was try to quantify and measure these aspects and don’t leave them only to personal sensations.”
In summary, tests have shown that face-to-face meetings facilitate, more than other ways of workingthe involvement of the participants who thus manage to develop valid ideas. However, they show a prevalence of negative emotions and stress. Especially if there are superiors in the group, the hierarchy relationship is perceived. Furthermore, there is more competitiveness.
Virtual reality turned out to be almost similar to physical reality regarding participation and the feeling of ‘immersion’. Individuals actively collaborate with each other. As if wearing a visor and being hidden behind an avatar made them feel protected, free to express themselves, more involved and creative. A negative aspect reported in this case at the end of the experiment is, however, eye strain. Tiredness caused by the current limits of technology. The available visors are not yet perfectly ergonomic and comfortable as one would like but they are heavy and bulky. Finally, videoconferencing has proven to be an effective way of working, albeit with strong communication limitations.
During the meeting people focus on the topic to be discussed, they speak without overlapping and the level of tension is moderate. But they say they’re bored. In this case, therefore, the approach is utilitarian. Different environments therefore – this is the conclusion of the research – have equally different consequences on work performance. The results can be used in corporate human resources, to choose the most suitable internal communication tool depending on the objective to be achieved. “Virtual reality – underlines De Pisapia – can also be applied to other situations, such as school. The expectations are that it will become more and more present. This is why we need to know it well to be able to live with it. When the viewers are smaller and lighter, we will all be able go into the metaverse, but aware of what we do.”

AMLO discussed with NASA a plan to have Internet throughout the country
Mexico City. An alternative to achieve internet communication throughout the national territory could be with satellites that could be put into orbit in collaboration with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The topic was part of the conversation that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador had on April 23 with directors of that US organization.
It is part of the joint development strategy of North America, although “it takes time,” said the president. It would be having 60 thousand satellites to cover the entire national territory. “That matters a lot to us,” he said at the conference at the National Palace.
The issue gave rise to the president to insist that Mexico is interested in collaborating with the United States and Canada. Of the first, “we are already the main commercial partner.” The only thing is that respect for the sovereignties of the countries must be guaranteed because “economic integration is convenient for us.”
In fact, he said, the nearshoring It is a product of the political work that was done from Mexico. He immediately mentioned that during his campaign to become president of the United States, Donald Trump said that he did not want the North American trade agreement, he wanted to close the United States economy because companies and jobs were moving to Mexico and the deficit increased. .
Then, Trump changed his mind “because campaigns are one thing and the government is another.”
However, President López Obrador pointed out, there is a need to work for this economic integration and end economic and commercial dependence and that there are no predominant regions as was happening with respect to China.
He said that he has insisted with the governments of the United States and Canada to have planning for the future. China must be recognized for this, as it has a well-defined plan for the year 2035 and 2050.
However, in North America there is none. “Here the saying that the pumpkins settle along the path applies.”
Regarding the conversation with NASA managers, the president commented that this organization also has a project to identify, through satellites, the places where water is available. “They offered that job that they are going to give us and they already have a lot of progress.”
Managers Bill Nelson and Pamela Melroy also commented on their work to prevent fires, particularly to detect them early, they can even tell if it is an arson fire.

SpaceX reveals the design of a spacewalk suit
The spacewalk suit is based on the suit used by astronauts on the Crew Dragon spacecraft. Unlike the latter, the former is distinguished by a new design at the joints, providing the necessary degree of mobility in outer space, improved temperature management and an updated helmet with a sun shield, camera and head-up display, providing the information necessary in outer space.
The suits are planned to be used for the first time during the private tourist mission Polaris Dawn, which involves a two-hour spacewalk (taking into account the time for depressurization and subsequent pumping of air into Crew Dragon). In the future, the suits are planned to be used in regular missions of Crew Dragon ships.
The mission is planned for early summer.
In February, the publication reported that the Polaris Dawn spacewalk mission had been postponed from April to mid-2024. The transfer is due to safety reasons, requiring, in particular, modifications to the Crew Dragon spacecraft and spacesuit for spacewalks.
