Former pole vault world champion Shawn Barber died on Wednesday. The Canadian was just 29 years old. “It’s tragic to lose such a good boy at such a young age,” mourns his manager.
Shawn Barber is the 2015 world pole vault champion when he won gold in Beijing with a jump of 5.90 meters. A year later he jumped over 6.00 meters and was still the Canadian record holder.
In 2016, he also took part in the Rio Olympics despite testing positive for cocaine a month before the games.
Barber argued that he tested positive after a date with a woman who had used cocaine without his knowledge. This declaration was accepted at the time by the International Athletics Federation and the World Anti-Doping Agency WADA.
In Rio, Barber finished a disappointing 10th. A few years later, in 2020, he ended his athletics career at the age of 26. Now he has died at the age of 29 from “medical complications”. The Canadian was reportedly struggling with health problems.
“He was an incredible athlete, but above all a guy with his heart in the right place who always thought about others. “It’s tragic to lose such a good boy at such a young age,” said Barber’s manager Paul Doyle, mourning the death of his partner.
