Dear readers, I begin with great gratitude this difficult but beautiful adventure at the helm of the newspaper I joined for the first time when I was still a high school student with the dream of undertaking a fascinating profession like that of a journalist. Gratitude towards those who preceded me – Alberto Faustini was one of my teachers – and towards those who wanted me back here, in the editorial office in via Volta, the place that since I was a boy I have always considered my ideal workplace. Gratitude towards you, who read this newspaper every day, and who are its true strength.
The values and principles of South Tyrol – autonomy, democracy, freedom, pluralism -, as well as the role and quality of the work of the newspaper you have in your hand, are reading on your PC, tablet or smartphone, will remain the same as Always. Those of a history that has seen this newspaper as the protagonist of the South Tyrolean area for almost 80 years now. A newspaper that will continue to tell the story of today’s Alto Adige through everyday news, but which will also try to look at tomorrow’s with food for thought, investigations, in-depth analysis, because the role of this newspaper is also to contribute to the growth of our community, increasingly transforming itself into a place of debate and proposals for the future of this land.
I am well aware of the professionalism and passion of my colleagues in the editorial team and I know that I can count on a high-quality team, which also includes all the other people who contribute every day to creating this newspaper, starting from our valid collaborators in the area and without forgetting the printing, the commercial and administrative parts.
Together with them I would like to be able to bring to the pages of Alto Adige some points of view that I have learned to appreciate during my life and professional journey: the great opportunity to grow and live “inside” different cultures that this land of border (but I prefer to define it as a “land of hinges”, which unites instead of dividing), the inestimable value of the many voluntary associations that permeate our cities and our towns, the excellence – often hidden – that many of our entrepreneurial, cultural and sporting realities, the desire to do things that distinguishes the population of this special land from so many points of view.
We will try to tell the good news and the most beautiful stories of this province (and also of the neighboring ones, because our world does not end either at Brenner or Salorno) and we will try to do so by giving an even greater voice to young people and women, and in general to the many people who for one reason or another have not yet found space in the newspaper. We will do it without hiding what could (should) work better in this land, addressing problems – the cost of housing, the long waiting lists in healthcare, the many worries for the future linked to major climate, demographic and geopolitical changes – that they touch every day.
To do this, I count on you, dear readers: continue, as you have always done up to now, to tell us what matters to you, ask us to explain, tell and delve deeper into what moves our society every day.
Let us hear your voice, and we will make it heard by those who decide the fate of our province: without controversy but also without discounts, moved only by the desire to understand and interpret our territory.
And tell us what you liked about the newspaper and where we can improve too. Because in this era of enormous and sudden changes, the world of information is also experiencing a transformation that we will have to know how to interpret while looking to the future.
We will have the opportunity to get to know each other better in the coming months, traveling towards a milestone – that of the 80 years of this newspaper – which we plan to celebrate with you in 2025: because Alto Adige is and will remain first and foremost your newspaper. Enjoy the reading!
From dead chickens to diapers and wood waste in organic waste containers: “We are going to check incorrect sorters more strictly” (Sint-Niklaas)
Sint-Niklaas/Temse/Waasmunster/Sint-Gillis-Waas/Stekene –
Waste intermunicipal company MIWA, responsible for waste collection and the recycling parks in Sint-Gillis-Waas, Sint-Niklaas, Stekene, Temse and Waasmunster, will closely monitor the contents of the green organic waste containers in the coming weeks. Too often waste that doesn’t belong there ends up there, even dead chickens and used diapers.
“Gft stands for vegetable, fruit and garden waste. But we have noticed that many people use the containers to dump waste that does not belong there,” says Maxime Vanderhaeghen, spokesperson for MIWA. (Read more below the photo)
For example, the garbage collectors found used diapers, compostable bags, bread bags, plastic bags, wood blocks, vacuum cleaner bags and even dead chickens in the green containers. “And that is not the intention,” says Vanderhaeghen. “Mistakes happen out of ignorance or inattention. But unfortunately the collection team also has to deal with residual waste that is hidden under a layer of organic waste. The collectors then have to manually remove it from the collection truck during the round wrong avoid waste in the garbage truck.”
“If residual waste ends up in the organic waste bin, the entire load of the collection truck cannot be composted, but must be processed as residual waste. So get burned. Very polluting and also very expensive”
Maxime Vanderhaeghen
Spokesperson MIWA
“That is why MIWA will organize strict checks on the correct sorting of organic waste in the coming weeks,” says the spokesperson. “Throwing your waste in the wrong container has major consequences. If residual waste ends up in the organic waste bin, the entire load of the collection truck cannot be composted, but must be processed as residual waste. So get burned. Very polluting and also very expensive. Every citizen is partly responsible for this.” (Read more below the photo)
A team from MIWA will now accompany the regular collectors of organic waste in the coming weeks. “Containers with sorting errors are not emptied. They remain standing with an information hanger on the container stating the reason why it was refused,” Vanderhaeghen added.
If you have any doubts about what may or may not go in the green or blue bag, you can find all the information on the waste calendar or the sorting guide at www.miwa.be.

The index annually evaluates the situation for journalists in 180 countries, measuring five indicators: political, social, economic, legal framework and security.
