By 2040, space heating and hot water in Vienna should be provided exclusively by renewable energy sources.
Vienna (OTS) – “Out of fossil gas and into a sustainable and clean energy supply for the city,” is how Josef Taucher, chairman of the SPÖ club in Vienna City Hall, sums up the energy strategy. With the Vienna Heat Plan 2040 presented today, Vienna is now offering for the first time a Vienna-wide target image of the possibilities for climate-neutral heat supply in the future. This also means the end of the approximately 600,000 gas heaters currently installed. “The exit and independence from fossil energy sources is a central building block for the energy transition and climate neutrality of Vienna in 2040. The Vienna Heat Plan 2024 presented today is the next milestone on this path. The rapid expansion and decarbonization of district heating plays a central role. We in Vienna are investing over 30 billion euros in the heat transition and the phase-out of fossil gas by 2040,” said Taucher.
The Vienna Heat Plan 2040 makes the stages and progress of the comprehensive and on-track expansion of the district heating network and the neighborhood heating networks visible to all Viennese. “As a public roadmap, it offers the Viennese guidance on when and how the phase-out of fossil fuels will take place in their urban area and their own four walls,” emphasizes Taucher. The heat plan serves as a foundation and orientation for the city on the way to climate neutrality and thus to an independent, crisis-proof and, above all, sustainable heat supply.
In the Vienna Heat Plan 2040, various areas were defined and identified, based on the current and expected heat needs up to 2040. Both infrastructural and local conditions were taken into account, such as the availability of district heating or the possible uses of geothermal energy. On this basis, three main categories of areas have been identified: those most suitable for centralized district heating, areas with good suitability for local heating networks and areas where individual climate-neutral heat supply is recommended. The Vienna Heat Plan 2040 provides information about which heat supply solution is most suitable, which measures can already be implemented today and which service and advice options are available.
“Only together with well-informed and integrated Viennese can we achieve the necessary high energy levels, phase out fossil fuels, and create a decarbonized city with a high quality of life for the next generations,” Taucher is convinced.
In addition, Taucher refers to the comprehensive billion-dollar investment program for the next five years presented by Wien Energie at the beginning of May: “Wien Energie is making advance payments for the expansion. It is investing over 100 million euros to pre-finance the district heating connections. It is an important contribution to the decarbonization of Vienna,” said Taucher. (final) ew/sh

The Future of Berkshire Hathaway: Greg Abel Takes the Reins as Chief Investment Officer
Insights from Berkshire Hathaway Meeting
This year’s Berkshire Hathaway meeting provided shareholders with valuable insights into the future leadership of the company. Warren Buffett hinted at Greg Abel’s role in managing investments post his succession, sparking discussions on the succession plan.
Abel’s Expertise in Utility Business
During the meeting, Abel showcased his deep understanding of the utility business, emphasizing the need for a cultural shift to address challenges such as wildfire risks and operational efficiency. His experience in leading Berkshire’s utility unit highlighted his strategic acumen.
Succession Planning and Investor Confidence
Succession planning was a key focus, especially after the passing of Vice Chairman Charlie Munger. Buffett, Abel, and Ajit Jain reassured investors about the board’s preparedness for leadership transitions. The discussion around capital allocation and investment management post-Buffett’s era raised questions about future strategies.
Challenges in Capital Allocation
Buffett’s evolving thoughts on leaving capital allocation to Abel highlighted the complexities of stock picking and investment management. While Abel’s track record in deal-making is commendable, the shift in responsibilities raised concerns about transparency and communication with investors.
Confidence in Abel’s Leadership
CEOs of Berkshire’s subsidiaries expressed confidence in Abel’s leadership, citing his wisdom, humility, and commitment to the company’s core values. Abel’s ability to empower executives while maintaining Berkshire’s operational independence was acknowledged as a strength.
Future Outlook and Challenges
Despite the anticipation of Abel’s leadership, challenges in finding significant investment opportunities were discussed. Buffett’s caution about expecting extraordinary performance in the future highlighted the need for strategic decision-making and market insights.
Stamina and Continuity
Buffett’s enduring presence and Abel’s preparedness for leadership transitions indicated a continuity in Berkshire’s operations. While concerns about energy levels were raised, analysts praised Abel’s performance and commitment to the company’s vision.
