Switzerland will hold a peace conference on Ukraine at the highest level, the President of the Alpine country, Viola Amherd, announced. According to them, this is happening at the request of the Ukrainian head of state Volodymyr Zelensky, who arrived in Switzerland on Monday. World agencies have informed about this.
“At the peace summit we are open to all countries that respect our sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Reuters quoted Zelensky as saying after a meeting with Amherd in Bern.
According to the DPA agency, Zelenskyj ruled out that Russia would also take part in the negotiations, which had attacked Ukraine militarily almost two years ago and conquered large areas in the south and east of the country. At the same time, the Ukrainian president expressed the wish that China and the countries of the so-called global south would also take part in the summit.
Amherd did not say when the conference would take place. However, she said that Swiss and Ukrainian diplomats will begin preparations for them in the coming days.
Continuation of negotiations
According to the DPA, the format of the summit in Switzerland will be based on the four conferences on the Ukrainian peace plan that have so far taken place in Denmark, Saudi Arabia, Malta and on Sunday in Davos, Switzerland. In Davos, 83 countries and international organizations took part in the low-level meeting, but not China. The plan lists the basic requirements for peace, which Kiev has formulated in ten points. These include Russia’s withdrawal from all parts of the country, punishment of Russian war criminals and reparations.
After meeting with the heads of state and government of Switzerland, Zelensky will attend in person for the first time at the World Economic Forum in Davos, which is scheduled to be attended by representatives of eight dozen countries, including G7 states, members of the European Union and a number of non-European countries.
Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis said on Sunday that China must be involved in joint efforts to end the Russo-Ukrainian war. According to him, countries such as Brazil, India or the Republic of South Africa, which maintain a dialogue with Russia and take part in the negotiations in Davos, could also play an important role.
