Sony has announced the indefinite decommissioning of the PlayStation 4 servers for the popular puzzle platformer, LittleBigPlanet 3. This permanent shutdown comes after temporary server outages earlier this year due to ongoing technical issues. Fans are now concerned that countless player creations, which were not saved locally, may be lost forever.
In an update to their support pages, Sony stated, “Due to ongoing technical issues which resulted in the LittleBigPlanet 3 servers for PlayStation 4 being taken offline temporarily in January 2024, the decision has been made to keep the servers offline indefinitely.” This means that all online services and access to other players’ creations for LittleBigPlanet 3 are no longer available.
LittleBigPlanet 3 became beloved among gamers for its creative and flexible gameplay mechanics, allowing players to create their own platforming levels. While certain offline features will still be accessible and user-generated content stored locally will remain intact, players will no longer be able to share or access data that was stored on Sony’s servers – which likely comprised a significant portion of user-generated content.
The closure of LittleBigPlanet’s PS4 servers follows a similar fate faced by its predecessor on PS3. The PS3 version had its servers shut down in 2021 due to persistent DDOS attacks; however, PS4 players were able to continue enjoying online services until January of this year when malicious mods posed a threat to game security. At that time, the game’s Twitter account announced: “We are temporarily taking the LittleBigPlanet servers offline whilst we investigate a number of issues that have been reported.”
The fears expressed by some players about permanent server closure have unfortunately come true. One long-time player shared their disappointment on Reddit saying: “Nearly sixteen years worth of user-generated content… Absolutely iconic levels locked away forever with no way to experience them again. The only access to these levels I have is through the servers. I would be devastated if I could never experience them again.”
Unfortunately, LittleBigPlanet 3’s permanent server shutdown reflects a broader trend in the gaming industry. Over recent years, numerous older games have seen their online services retired, leaving players unable to enjoy certain multiplayer features or access user-generated content. Nintendo, for example, recently took down online multiplayer for Wii U and 3DS games, impacting titles like Splatoon and Animal Crossing: New Leaf.
Ubisoft also faced criticism when they not only shut off servers for their always-online racing game The Crew but also revoked PC players’ licenses to the game itself.
The closure of LittleBigPlanet 3’s servers marks a somber day for both the developers and the dedicated community. Community manager Steven Isbell expressed his sadness on Twitter stating: “This is naturally a very sad day for all of us involved with LittleBigPlanet…I’m still here to listen to you all though and will take time over the coming weeks to reach out to the community and listen.”
As online services continue to evolve within the gaming industry, it remains crucial for players and developers alike to find innovative solutions preserving cherished experiences while adapting in an ever-changing digital landscape.

The anime will reportedly be co-produced by CBS Eye Animation Productions, the animation division of CBS Studios, Sony Pictures Television and Original Film, with Mike McMahan and Joe Chandler writing the first episode. The game has been released in many parts, and each part features stable and mischievous characters. When it became an anime, people were interested in what kind of poses they would have. I don’t know if it will be a mischievous character like the cover of a game sold in America, something like He-Man and Masters of the Universe, or a little guy like a Japanese anime.
