Spanish hopeful Carlos Rodriguez reached a milestone by winning the best victory of his young career at the Tour de Romandie, Sunday in Vernier, near Geneva. This is the first time that the young rider from the Ineos Grenadier team has won a stage event counting towards the World Tour.
The Andalusian, aged 23, had made the difference the day before by taking third place in the queen stage (five climbs) during which the former leader Juan Ayuso, another young Spanish talent (21 years old), did not couldn’t keep up with the best.
As expected, the fifth and final stage, over a 150.8 km course without major difficulty around Vernier, did not upset the general classification. At the end of a slow race, contested in rainy and cool weather, the Frenchman Dorian Godon once again showed his burst of speed in the sprint. He had already won in the first stage on Wednesday.
“Cycling is a story of spiraling, of confidence. My teammates did a lot of work for me”reacted the runner from the Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale team, aged 27, to the microphone of the L’Équipe channel.
This is the twelfth victory for the French team this season, already three more than during the entire 2023 season, and the second of the Ile-de-France player’s career in a stage of the World Tour.
A victory at the 2023 Tour de France
Carlos Rodriguez was content to stay in the peloton on Sunday, surrounded by his teammates, including the Colombian Egan Bernal. He maintained his small lead in the general classification, of 7 seconds over the Russian Alexandre Vlasov (2e) and 9 on the German Florian Lipowitz (3e). The best Frenchman, Lenny Martinez, finished 8e at 52 seconds.
Rodriguez had shown his potential in 2023 by winning a mountain stage of the Tour de France in Morzine then finishing fifth in the general classification in Paris, in his first participation. Early in form this season, three weeks ago he won the last stage of the Tour of the Basque Country and took second place in the final.

Tour de Romandie
12:21 Vernier – 15:41 Vernier
Dorian Godon (Decathlon-AG2R) ended the Tour de Romandie with a second stage victory. The Frenchman won a rain-covered final stage. In the sprint of a thinned group, he beat his competitors a few days ago. Thibau Nys (6th), Milan Menten (8th) and Gianni Vermeersch (10th) finished in the top 10. Carlos Rodriguez (Ineos) is the overall winner.

Still sprinting after pinpricks in dog weather
The weather gods were particularly favorable to the peloton in the Tour de Romandie yesterday in the queen stage. It was a bit different for the final stage.
It was a whole day of racing in dogging weather, treacherous on the winding local rounds in Vernier. A busy Rémi Cavagna tried to outwit the sprinter teams, but that would not work.
In advance, the climbing on this last day did not seem selective enough and the rain ultimately did not change that. Among other Florian Lipowitz tried – in vain – to bend the rankings to his will.
Ineos controlled a whole day before finally winning again in a WorldTour classification and Lidl-Trek was also determined to make it a sprint. A 2nd stage victory for Thibau Nys this week?
In the left last bend Nys hit the wheel of his pilot Simone Consonni lost, who sprinted to place 2 himself. Just like a few days ago, the stage win went to Lepe Dorian Godonwho again arranged it perfectly.
The Frenchman went second through the last corner and made it a long sprint. His competitors were far too far and were no longer involved.
Carlos Rodríguez Cano survived the final day and can celebrate his first final win in a stage race at the age of 23.
Cavagna was busy in the rain.
Godon: “I didn’t hesitate when I saw the line”
“It was not a nice day with all that rain. I was launched well at 400 meters and was able to attack the last corner. When I saw the line, I no longer hesitated,” said stage winner Dorian Godon, who also takes over the points jersey from teammate Vendrame.
The final win went to Carlos Rodriguez, who was of course very satisfied with it. What are the Spaniard’s next goals? “Via the Dauphiné it goes to the Tour, where I want to improve compared to last year,” said yellow jersey Rodriguez after the final stage.
Phase by phase
Milan Menten finishes 8th and Gianni Vermeersch 10th, meaning 3 Belgians sprint to a result in this final stage. The final victory goes to Carlos Rodriguez.
Pilot Consonni, who lost Nys in the hectic pace of the last bend, eventually finished 2nd. Our compatriot ends up in the top 10, in 6th.
Godon does it again!
The fast men are just too far before the last treacherous bend, Dorian Godon comes through second and wins! So close to the finish, no one could beat the Frenchman, who took his 2nd of the week with another long sprint.
Van Dijke is well in front, Nys has lost Consonni’s wheel.
Last km.
The fast men are well and truly moving towards the last kilometer. Consonni plays pacer for Thibau Nys.
Movistar checks
Once again it is Movistar that ensures peace. Aranburu will participate, just like Vermeersch.
Menten moves up in the wake of his Lotto teammates and can therefore also sprint. UAE tries with a late lunge at 2 km.
This way the attack is quickly neutralized. Lipowitz moves up and perhaps wants to throw himself in the middle.
At 4.5 km the road rises for the last time and then Guillaume Martin tries again. A rider from Movistar jumps in, but does not take over.
Thibau Nys and Tim van Dijke are certainly there given the work of Lidl-Trek and Visma-Lease a Bike, but the presence of other fast men in this thinned out group is anyone’s guess. Andrea Vendrame is in Nys’ wheel, but has already lost some strength.
The attack did not go far, because the group was already regrouped 8 km from the end. Who will get a sprint train on track in this chaotic finale?
Another 10 kilometers
The limited lead of Hepburn and Valgren is 10 seconds at 10 kilometers from the finish. The roads here are largely flat, although be careful with the slippery asphalt.
Hepburn and Valgren, that is the duo that still wants to outpace the peloton. Lidl-Trek and Visma-Lease a Bike lead the group.
No, EF-EasyPost is now taking its chance with a rider on the offensive. Someone from Jayco-AlUla jumps over.
Vendrame seized
Have the attackers now finally finished? Still 13 km to go and we will soon leave the local circuit.
Lidl-Trek takes control behind Vendrame. If he wins a stage, Nys can still take over the points jersey. Due to the many rain jackets, we cannot clearly see who missed out on the sprinters. But it is certainly not a large platoon.
Cartigny
In the intermediate sprint, Vendrame outpaces Paleni from the peloton. So final victory for his orange points jersey can hardly escape him. The Italian is jeopardizing his chances of winning the stage by persevering.
Jacobs is now back on the bike after his slide.
