A recent opinion poll revealed that most students in American universities do not care about the protests that broke out in several universities in the United States against the war in Gaza.
According to Axios, the poll conducted by Generation Lab and published on Tuesday indicates that the war and the protests accompanying it may not harm the election prospects of US President Joe Biden among young voters as much as previously thought.
The survey included 1,250 students, and revealed that only 8 percent of university students participated in the protests, whether they supported Gaza or even Israel.
The less important Middle East
Students rated the conflict in the Middle East as the least important issue facing them out of nine options.
The war in Gaza came after health care reform, racial justice and civil rights, economic justice and opportunity, education financing and access, and climate change.
The poll showed that nearly 34 percent of participants blame Hamas, 19 percent blame Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, 12 percent blame the Israeli people, and 12 percent blame US President Joe Biden.
Protest methods
Eighty-one percent of students support holding protesters accountable, and agree with the idea that those who destroyed property, vandalized buildings or illegally occupied them should be held accountable by their universities, according to the poll.
A majority also said they opposed protest methods, with 67 percent finding occupying campus buildings unacceptable, and 58 percent saying it was unacceptable to refuse a university order to disperse.
Another 90 percent said that preventing pro-Israel students from entering parts of campus was unacceptable.
Ironically, students are still more likely to say they support the pro-Palestinian camps than to oppose them.
45 percent explained that they support the camps that support Palestine strongly or slightly, while 30 percent are neutral, and 24 percent strongly or slightly oppose this.
More than 2,000 people were arrested on campuses across the United States during pro-Palestine protests.
Student demonstrations, including encampments on campus and takeovers of buildings, have been met with suspensions, expulsions, arrests, use of police, and cancellation of graduation ceremonies.
It is worth noting that 58 percent of those who participated in or favored protests against Israel said that they would not consider forming friendships with someone who participated in a march for Israel.
Meanwhile, 64 percent of those who participated in pro-Israel protests said they would remain friends with someone who marched against Israel.
This study was conducted from May 3 to 6 on a representative sample of 1,250 students nationwide from two- and four-year colleges. The Generation Lab conducts the survey using a demographic sample to represent university students in community colleges, technical colleges, trade schools, and institutions. Public and private four-year classes.
