New Delhi ∙ Government hospitals in the country that are not medical colleges are also allowed to start medical PG courses. According to the new norms of the National Medical Commission (NMC), the PG course can be granted even without an undergraduate medical course if certain requirements are fulfilled. Existing or newly established government hospitals can start the course.
The aim is to create more PG doctors in district hospitals. Instead of first approval, then approval, it will now be a single step. The examination in the hospital is not carried out annually, but only on request.
∙ All medical colleges can apply for PG courses after one year of commencement of studies. Till now, the PG group was allotted to new medical colleges only after at least three groups were admitted.
∙ Existing courses can be continued, but new diploma courses or an increase in seats are not possible. Diploma courses can be converted into degree programs if the requirements are met. There is also no hurdle to start a two-year scholarship program.
∙ According to the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, 5% of seats in government or government-aided higher education institutions are reserved for persons with disabilities.
A penalty of Rs 1 crore will be imposed on the institutes if they fail to meet the new standards for quality assurance in PG medical courses.
