Connecticut Bridge Demolition After Tanker Fire
Over the weekend, workers returned to Norwalk to complete the demolition of a bridge in Connecticut that was severely damaged by a fire caused by a tanker truck crash on Interstate 95, which ignited into flames.
The closure of both sides of the highway between Exits 14 and 16 continues as crews work on removing the Fairfield Avenue span that melted due to the intense heat of the gasoline-fed fire.
Governor’s Statement
Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont has announced that the affected stretch of the highway will remain closed until at least Monday.
Live Demolition Webcam
A live webcam has been set up by the state to show the ongoing demolition work in real-time. By Saturday evening, the entire span had been removed, and crews were clearing the remaining debris from the roadway.
Impact on Traffic
The closure of I-95 led to a 13-mile backup on the southbound side of the Merritt Parkway as drivers sought alternative routes. Delays were also reported on the northbound side and surrounding local roads in Norwalk, Westport, Darien, and Stamford.
Details of the Crash
The crash occurred when the tanker truck collided with another commercial vehicle and a passenger car, according to Norwalk Mayor Harry W. Rilling.
Fortunately, there were no serious injuries reported, and Rilling commended the state and local workers for their quick response to extinguish the fire.
Collision Sequence
Reports from NBC Connecticut indicated that a Chevrolet Camaro merging onto I-95 south collided with the fuel truck, causing it to veer into the center lane and hit a tractor-trailer.
The fuel truck was carrying 8,500 gallons of gas at the time of the crash, resulting in a massive fireball.
School Closures and Safety Measures
Due to the incident, schools in Norwalk were closed on Friday, and Governor Lamont advised drivers to avoid the area throughout the weekend to facilitate the work of the cleanup crews.

Mobile number portability in Togo
In October 2021, the Togolese telecoms regulator carried out a study to determine the population’s opinion regarding the launch of mobile number portability. 95% of consumers were in favor of this idea.
The Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Posts of Togo launched mobile number portability on Friday, May 3. It was during an official ceremony chaired by Cina Lawson, the Minister of the Digital Economy and Digital Transformation
Togolese telecoms consumers will now be able to change mobile telephone operator while retaining their original numbers. “Their choice will now only be based on the quality of service offered by the operators or on the affordability of the tariff offers” explains ARCEP.
It was in April 2023 that ARCEP started the technical implementation of mobile number portability in Togo, in accordance with the relative regulations adopted in July 2022 and approved by the government a month later. The initiative follows a market study carried out by the regulator in October 2021, which showed that 95% of Togolese consumers were in favor.
The advent of portability should make it possible to introduce more competition into the Togolese mobile telephony market, for the benefit of consumers. According to ARCEP data for the 4th quarter of 2023, Moov Africa holds 59% of the 7.5 million mobile telephone subscribers, while Togo Cellular holds a market share of 41%.
