On Monday, along with voter meetings in the state of Iowa, the month-long US primary election marathon began, in which the Republican and Democratic parties will select candidates for the office of US president.
Among Republicans, the overwhelming favorite is former President Trump, who won 51% of the vote in Iowa, well ahead of his main rivals: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley.
The next primary election will take place on January 23rd in the state of New Hampshire, where polls show Haley has a better chance of winning against Trump.
However, Vargulis concludes that Trump’s cards are getting stronger and that it is hard to imagine anyone else winning the Republican primary at the moment.
It is also unlikely that Trump could be excluded from the US presidential election due to the numerous legal proceedings.
In the presidential election on November 5th, like four years ago, Trump and the Democrat, the current US President Joe Biden, are likely to compete against each other.

The outcome of the US presidential election is also being followed with great interest in Europe.
Incumbent President Biden has provided extensive support for Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression, but Trump and Desantis believe the United States is investing too much in Ukraine.
Republican politician Haley is spreading the opposite message. She stressed that supporting Ukraine is in the interests of the United States.
“Russia said: As soon as we occupy Ukraine, Poland and the Baltic states will be next. They are NATO countries and that can drag America into a war. Therefore, war must be prevented in advance,” Haley said.
“My husband is a military veteran who is back in action. The last thing I want is for him or anyone else to be drawn into war again. And that is why the war must be stopped. It only costs us 3.5 percent of the defense budget to support Ukraine. And all of that!
The Europeans have understandably paid more as war is at their doorstep. But the war must end to protect us and our national security.”
Aid to Ukraine is also being discussed at the World Economic Forum in Davos this week, which was also attended by a Ukrainian delegation led by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
In Davos there were discussions about the peace plan for Ukraine, security advisers from more than 80 countries in Europe, Asia and Latin America sat at the table and discussed the 10-step peace plan for Ukraine, one of the conditions of which is to regain all the territories of Ukraine.
This has been discussed both by those countries that fully support Ukraine and those that continue to cooperate with Russia and do not fully understand Russia’s atrocities. China did not take part in these talks, but Russia was not invited.
Foreign policy expert Vargulis believes that Zelensky’s visit to Davos was without any particular successes; Major players are not expected to make any significant announcements on additional aid to Ukraine.
Vargulis admits that any future visit by Zelensky to the West will become increasingly difficult, as Western society is becoming “fatigue” with the war in Ukraine and new security challenges are emerging, such as the tense situation in the Central Eastern region.
CONTEXT:
The US presidential election is scheduled for November 5, 2024. The US President is not elected by a direct popular vote, but by the so-called Electoral College. On election day, citizens elect their representatives to the electoral college, which then votes on the election of the president.
Such an electoral system means that a candidate who receives fewer total votes than a competitor can win the presidential election. This happened, for example, in 2016 when Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton.
The ruling Democratic Party is expected to renominate current White House owner Joe Biden, who has vowed to run for a second term, for president without serious competition. Biden’s age raises the biggest questions in the context of his candidacy, as he is already the oldest president in the history of the United States and must remain in office until the age of 86 if re-elected.
In the Republican Party, Donald Trump is the main candidate for the presidential nomination, whose campaign has not yet been affected by the allegations against him.
