Never refuse a gift – get the goat in the helicopter
During the first meal of the daythe breakfast sandwiches Anya generously brought, remember Jan An event that showed what cultural conflicts can arise when negotiating as a diplomat.
During a truce negotiation that ended positively, a tribe wanted to give Jan a different parting gift. When he was about to board a helicopter, they brought lifelong goats to give to him.
The helicopter pilot didn’t want it on board, but Jan knew what it meant to refuse such a gift and finally managed to convince the pilot. He then took the goat, which had survived the certainly dizzying flight, to a refugee camp, where it was loved by the children and baptized Jan.

He left his wife a suicide note after insulting Saddam Hussein
But everyone JanHis stories aren’t as funny as a goat in a helicopter. He remembers the time he accidentally insulted the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in one place. He then traveled by helicopter, which was a classic way for the dictator to get rid of enemies. Jan was so worried that he gave his wife a farewell letter through the Swedish embassy.
He laughs at the anecdote on the bridge, but describes it as a really unpleasant incident.
So not to insult a dictator and always convince a pilot to bring a goat was advice that Jan Eliasson gave us in today’s episode. Since Linnea and Anja also give good insights into life, including how couples therapy can be a great help in relationships, you shouldn’t miss this episode.
