Thiruvananthapuram – Governor Arif Muhammad Khan, who is also the chancellor, will take a decision on the four VCs next month after the Supreme Court verdict on the appointment of vice-chancellors. The VCs of Calicut, Sanskrit, Sree Narayana and Digital Universities are likely to be sacked for their appointment, which is a violation of UGC rules.
The appointment of the VCs of Kerala, MG, CUSAT, Malayalam, Agriculture, Technology, Fisheries, Kannur, Calicut, Sanskrit, Sree Narayana and Digital Universities was legally entangled due to allegations of violation of UGC rules. The courts have already expelled the VCs of Engineering, Fisheries and Kannur University. The VCs from Kerala, MG, CUSAT, Malayalam and Agriculture have resigned due to expiry of their terms. In the case of the remaining 4 VCs, the Governor will take a decision after assessing whether there is any violation of UGC rules. Her hearing will take place next month.
The Supreme Court stayed further proceedings when the governor issued a show cause notice and held a hearing for nine VCs on the ground that they were appointed in violation of UGC rules. The Governor issued a notice to the VCs in October 2022. A year later, no decision has been made. With the Supreme Court ruling, the governor is likely to take action. The governor will be less likely to compromise on sacking the VCs as he is at loggerheads with the government. The Digital University VC is now taking over the management of the Technical University. If he is removed by the governor, the Technical University will also be without a Nathan. The government has approached the Supreme Court demanding appointment of permanent VCs in universities.
