The new season of the “Formula E” championship started with the first stage in Mexico this weekend and the German driver of the “Porsche” team, Pascal Wehrlein, emerged as the winner.
Wehrlein already won in qualifying, but retained the lead in the first corner of the race ahead of Sebastien Buemi, who in turn had to fend off Maximilian Ginter. Wehrlein only lost the lead when he chose “Attack Mode” twice, but when “Envision” driver Buemi did the same, the German managed to regain first position both times.
It should be noted that for Wehrlein, who once spent two seasons in “Formula 1”, this is the fifth victory of his career in the “Formula E” championship.
On the ninth lap, Buemi’s teammate Robin Frins suffered a serious accident on the “Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez” track, whereupon the safety car left the track.
Third place went to Nick Cassidy, making his Jaguar team debut. When Günter went for “Attack Mode” in the 15th lap, he managed to make it into the top three. The Maserati driver finished fourth, while Cassidy’s teammate Mitch Evans was fifth.
Last season’s champion, Jake Dennis, had a difficult qualifying at the Mexico City track, starting from fourteenth and only finishing ninth. Both his and Wehrlein’s cars were examined for suspected technical violations, but both drivers were acquitted.
The next competition will be a double stage on the street circuit of Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, on January 26th and 27th.
