Australian Police Shoot Teenage Boy in Perth Stabbing Incident
Australian police fatally shot a teenage boy who stabbed and injured a man in an attack that authorities believe had the characteristics of a terrorist act.
The teenager, identified as a 16-year-old Caucasian male, was armed with a knife when he carried out the assault in a suburb of Perth, according to Western Australia (WA) Premier Roger Cook.
Police Commissioner Col Blanch stated that the incident "bears the hallmarks" of a terrorist attack and meets the criteria for such a crime.
Police Response and Confrontation
On Saturday night, local police received a call from a male indicating his intention to commit acts of violence. Minutes later, another call reported a man with a knife running around the area. Police immediately dispatched three officers to the scene.
Upon arrival, the officers encountered the teen, who was alone and holding a large kitchen knife. Despite orders to drop the weapon, the suspect rushed towards the police. After attempts to subdue him with tasers failed, a third officer fired a single shot, fatally wounding the male.
Victim and Prior Knowledge
Following the shooting, it was discovered that the teen had previously stabbed and injured a middle-aged man. The victim is currently hospitalized in serious but stable condition with a back wound.
Blanch revealed that the teen was known to the police and had been part of a program addressing online radicalization for the past few years. The program aimed to address concerns of violent extremism in individuals exhibiting troubling behavior.
Community Concerns and Response
Police received multiple calls from members of Western Australia's Muslim community both before and after the incident, expressing concerns about the individual's behavior.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized that Australia is a peace-loving nation with no tolerance for violent extremism in a statement released following the incident.
Recent Incidents
This incident follows the recent stabbing of a priest and bishop at a church in Sydney, for which a 16-year-old suspect has been arrested on charges of terrorism.

The Decline of Press Freedom in South Korea: A Look at the 2024 World Press Freedom Index
In this year’s Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Korea was ranked 62nd in the world, dropping 15 places compared to last year.
Reporters Without Borders, which is headquartered in Paris, France, released the ‘2024 World Press Freedom Index’ report on the 3rd (local time). According to the report, Korea’s press freedom index was ranked 62. It dropped 15 places from 47 last year.
Countries with similar rankings to Korea included Ukraine (61st) and Malawi (63rd). Korea was included in the ‘problematic’ group along with Italy (46th), the United States (55th), and Japan (70th). Reporters Without Borders classifies the press freedom environment as ‘good’, ‘good’, ‘problematic’, ‘bad’, and ‘very bad’, and Korea was classified as ‘good’ until last year.
Reporters Without Borders said, “Several media companies in Korea have been threatened with prosecution on charges such as defamation,” adding, “Korea, which is a leader in communications technology, is a liberal democracy that respects freedom of the press and pluralism.” this, there are often cases where journalists are unable to fulfill their role as observers properly.” The group also said, “Korean journalists sometimes suffer online harassment, but there is little protection against this.”
The National Union of Press Workers issued a statement on the 3rd which criticized, saying, “Indicators have confirmed that press freedom has become a complete disaster in just two years of Yoon Seok-yeol’s administration,” and that “full responsibility lies .with President Yoon Seok-yeol.” The press union said, “The Korea Communications Commission and the Broadcasting Corporation claimed, “The control over the media that has been in place for the past two years, including suppressing and confusing reports criticizing power through the Communications Standards Commission and filled the president and board of directors of public broadcasting stations with parachutes from Yongsan, returned to international disgrace and a fall in national prestige.”
The media union said, “If this continues, press freedom in the Republic of Korea will fall to the worst level in history,” and demanded of Yoon Seok-yeol’s government, “Stop anachronistic control of the press and destroy the constitutional value of freedom of press expression.”
