Pato O’Ward is McLaren’s reserve driver for the upcoming F1 season and the team’s main driver in the IndyCar Championship. This allows the Mexican to perfectly compare the differences between the two categories of racing machines.
After finishing the IndyCar Series season in September and finishing fourth overall, O’Ward tested an F1 car at the Abu Dhabi circuit in late November. The athlete had the opportunity to take part in both the first training of the final phase and the junior tests after the competition. The tests even showed the second best result.
“F1 is a rocket compared to an IndyCar car,” admits O’Ward. “The way it corners, how quickly it stops and accelerates. The gearbox works very well. Everything about an F1 car comes from another planet. Honestly, there’s no other way to describe it. When you know what this car can do when cornering at high speed, it’s like a rocket on wheels.”
The athlete also discovered which muscles are most stressed by these racing formulas.
“In any case, IndyCar requires a lot more physical strength in the arms, while F1 puts the most strain on the neck,” says O’Ward. “But overall the F1 is a much more powerful car in every respect.”
The driver has been racing for the “Arrow McLaren” team since 2020 and has since developed into one of the fastest in the “IndyCar” championship. Victories in four races, third place in the overall standings once and winning the hearts of many fans, especially in his home country of Mexico.
“My priority at the moment is IndyCar and I want to win the Indy 500 and the entire championship,” says O’Ward ambitiously. “Next season, as soon as I finish my IndyCar duties, I will immediately travel to the F1 races. It’s going to be a busy year. But this year it was like that too, so I’ve gotten used to it a bit.
