In the fight for a place in the second round, Ostapenko defeated the Romanian Sorana Kirsteu in three sets 2:6, 6:2, 6:4. Alona is ranked 12th by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and is seeded sixth in Adelaide, while Kirstea is ranked 26th.
Alona collected points more successfully on her second serves than Kirstea and also scored significantly more points on the Romanian’s second serves.

The victory brings Ostapenko closer to the TOP10 world ranking, which may be enough to win the next round against French tennis player Caroline Garcia (WTA 20th).
Ostapenko also started successfully in doubles in Adelaide on Tuesday together with the Ukrainian Lyudmila Kichenok and defeated the Italian Yasmina Paolini and the neutral tennis player Ludmila Samsonova 6:4, 6:4 in the first round.
Tennis players are preparing for the first Grand Slam competition of the season at the Australian Open Championship, which begins on January 14 in Melbourne. Latvia’s second racket, Darja Semenistaja, will compete in the Australian Open Championship qualifiers.
