One of the attackers of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) politician Matthias Ecke in Dresden turned himself in to the police. This was reported by the Bild newspaper with reference to a representative of law enforcement agencies, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.
According to the publication, we are talking about a 17-year-old German citizen; he came to the police with his parents on Sunday night, after which he admitted to the attack. He did not provide any other information.
The young man was not taken into custody on the spot and was released home at the first stage. Later he will be questioned in the presence of a lawyer and a decision will be made on further measures.
The 41-year-old politician was attacked while he was putting up election posters on the street. He was seriously injured and required surgery. Information about the nature of the injuries received is not provided.
There is no official version about the motives of the attackers. The SPD in its press release linked the situation to the “hatred that was sown” in Germany by the Alternative for Germany party and right-wing extremists.
