An excellent start to the year for OHLA in the United States, one of its key markets. While the company announced a few days ago that it would carry out modernization work on a total of 13 New York subway stations for 528.0 million euros, its portfolio is now being strengthened by a new project in Illinois worth 305.7 million euros.
Once again, the company’s US subsidiary, Judlau Contracting, will be responsible for the execution of the new project, which was awarded in Illinois for 305.7 million euros. This brings the total to 21 contracts that the company has completed for the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority (ISTHA) since it began operations in the Midwest of the United States in 2014.

Among the most notable contracts in the country is the Purple Line Light Rail in Maryland, the largest project in its portfolio, awarded in UTE for a total amount of 2,210 million euros, which will contribute to promoting sustainable mobility of citizens.
Additionally, the company is conducting the design-build project in Brooklyn, New York to improve accessibility of the historic Borough Hall Station; the renovation of five stations on the Flushing Line in Queens (New York) for almost 200 million euros and the South Corridor Bus Rapid Transit in Florida, a project with funding of more than 320 million euros.
Scope of contract in Illinois
The scope of the company’s new contract in Illinois, located on the southern Tri-State Tollway (I-294), specifically the I-290/I-88 interchange, includes demolition and excavation work as well as the construction of 13 new steel beams and precast concrete bridges as well the removal of pavement and the placement of new concrete for almost 4 km of the road and shoulder southbound.
The demolition and replacement of almost 17,100 square meters of new noise barriers and the construction of almost 17,000 square meters of retaining walls will also be carried out. Judlau’s team will also implement drainage and utility improvements, intelligent transportation system infrastructure, temporary and permanent lighting systems, erosion control measures and landscaping improvements. In addition, there is, among other things, signage and maintaining traffic operations.
These measures will improve travel safety on a route where more than 300,000 vehicles travel daily. The I-290/I-88 interchange at I-294 is one of the most important in the highway network. Not just for local and commuter traffic, but also because it is an integral part of the regional freight transport network.
OHLA subsidiary Judlau currently has 13 active contracts in the Midwest, including major highway and bridge rehabilitation projects for clients such as the Illinois Department of Transportation, the City of Chicago and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Chicago.
