Standard announced on Thursday afternoon that Ivan Leko (45) had been appointed as the new head coach. He signed a 2.5-year contract and succeeds the dismissed Carl Hoefkens.
The Rouches wanted to appoint someone experienced and free, and that is the case with Leko. As a coach, he has already made Club Bruges champions (2018) and won the cup with Antwerp (2020). But at the end of October the Croatian was released in his own country at Hajduk Split.
On Wednesday, Standard management agreed with Leko on a 2.5-year contract. He has been in Croatia in recent days but was in Liège on Thursday morning to sign his contract. On Saturday morning he will leave for an internship in Marbella, Spain.
The new T1 may have to do without Steven Alzate (25) in the coming months. English club Brighton, which rents him out, is considering selling the Colombian midfielder this month as his contract expires in June and he can then leave on a free transfer. Alzate missed the last few games due to injury and will be out for a few more weeks, and is now also in England to recover.
