New Delhi: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has been elected as the president of Janata Dal United (JDU). Nitish Kumar was elected unanimously after the resignation of national president Lalan Singh. Lalan Singh was reportedly replaced because he showed more interest in JD(U)’s ally RJD.
The decision was taken at the national executive meeting in Delhi. Union Minister Giriraj Singh had revealed that Lalu Yadav had informed him that the JD(U) would merge with the RJD. Lalu Yadav’s son and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav denied this.
At the same time, it is reported that Nitish’s plan is to rejoin the BJP and in the process take control of the party. However, JD(U) general secretary Dhananjay Singh said that Nitish wanted to become the prime ministerial candidate of the opposition India Alliance and was therefore made the party president.
