There are still five months left until we officially know iOS 18 and the leaks already indicate that it is a revolutionary update

There is an hourglass in Apple Park that is so big and contains so many grains that it doesn’t completely tip over until June. This watch marks the start of WWDC 2024, Apple’s annual developer conference, whose main protagonist will be iOS 18. And with lots and lots and lots of artificial intelligence.
Because yes, AI has been playing the leading role in many market launches for a year and a half, although Apple apparently hasn’t jumped on the bandwagon. However, it seems that it will be 2024 when they announce their big revolution with Siri, in what some experts predict the biggest update in the history of the iPhone. There is nothing.
Mark Gurman raises expectations with iOS 18 and artificial intelligence
If you’re a regular reader of Applesfera, you already know Mark Gurman well. If not, tell you that he is a renowned Bloomberg journalist who has internal sources at Apple that make him one of the company’s biggest information leakers. Not all of his backstory is positive and he has occasionally been the victim of a false leak, but on the whole he is usually right.
Therefore, it is very relevant that someone like Gurman says a similar sentence to the one we titled this post with. And in his last newsletter, he responded to a question from a reader who asked him about iOS 18. Gurman said the following:
“I’m told that the new operating system is considered within the company to be one of the largest, if not the largest, iOS update in the company’s history.”
The journalist claims to have more information about this update, but took advantage of this matter to create a certain expectation since he did not provide any further information and limited himself to saying that he already planned to share more concrete details.
What we already know (and what we don’t) about iOS 18 and Siri.
Why do we mention Siri when we talk about iOS 18? Well, yes, precisely because the Assistant will be the epicenter of the changes coming with the next iPhone update. And not because of an intuition that many of us might already have as standard, but because There have already been leaks pointing to the assistant in this direction.
Technically, no list as such has been leaked with exact details about how the iPhone user experience will change with AI (we’ll wait for Gurman for that). Regarding Siri, it has already been leaked that it will be improved a new LLM language model that Apple has been working on for years and that should be more or less on par with OpenAI’s GPT-4.
This is fundamental This would allow Siri to have much more natural conversations with context. That is, keep some kind of history so that you don’t have to start every request from scratch and do much more natural actions, such as: E.g. ask him to “turn on the lights in the living room” and then say something like “And now this.” those in the kitchen.
A more natural and customizable Siri sounds good, although there are suggestions that it could be subscription-based and not free for everyone.
It was also discussed You can customize the assistant and that adapts to each user individually. In a way, it is reminiscent of the ChatGPT shop, where we can adapt different chatbots to different circumstances. This isn’t confirmed for Siri, but it could well be the case given this major adjustment.
Of course, there are two big shadows hanging over this AI revolution for Apple: its price and availability. As for the first, there are people who point to a possible new subscription, although this is not entirely clear either. What seems obvious is the second, since the requirements of such a language model require state-of-the-art hardware that could severely limit compatible iPhones.
Comprehensive knowledge comes in this last part where this AI runs, whether internally (and more privately) or on Apple’s servers. While this detail hasn’t been revealed, it makes most sense to imagine a blended model where the iPhone runs some basic functions and the rest is done in the cloud. And that’s exactly what Apple means: they are fully committed to ensuring the confidentiality of conversations.
Be that as it may, we wait to hear more details, be it from Gurman or another leaker. Nothing is expected from Apple until the aforementioned month of June, as they are not known for announcing anything until their own events arrive.
