Vice-leader “Mogo”/LSPA defeated the hockey school “Rīga” (HS “Rīga”) in a game of the “Optibet” Hockey League (OHL) on Wednesday only in a series of post-game blows, while in another game Jelgava “Zemgale”/LBTU had an overwhelming success. “Mogo”/LSPA defeated the ice hockey players of HS “Rīga” at home with 5:4 (1:3, 1:1, 2:0, 0:0, 1:0).
In the first ten minutes of the game, Gints Šnepsts, Aleksandrs Zaprivoda and Edvīns Bērziņš distinguished themselves with precise shots for the guests and made the score 3-0, to which the hosts responded with a goal from Kārļis Ozoliņš, reducing the visitors’ lead on two goals. In the middle of the second period, Šnepsts restored HS “Rīga”’s three-goal lead, but half a minute later Renārs Kamergrauzis sent the puck into the visitors’ goal and again reduced the home team’s deficit to two precise shots.
In the final third, Mārtiņš Šults and Normunds Vībans scored for “Mogo”/LSPA, who equalized three minutes before the end of regular time. When extra time ended without a goal, Gints Meija shot the game-winning puck into the guests’ goal in the postgame shootout and gave “Mogo”/LSPA the victory.
In another game, “Zemgale”/LBTU Kaunas defeated “City” at home with 10:0 (1:0, 4:0, 5:0). For the home team, Kevin Strādnieks stood out with two goals and three assists, Gustavs Miller scored four (1+3) points, while Artūrs Karaša scored two goals and Kārlis Bucenieks also scored an assist.
The home team’s goal was guarded by Marius Bajarun-Galejs, who saved all 20 of the opponent’s shots and played a “dry” game. The leader of the tournament table with 46 points in 25 games is “Zemgale”/LBTU, “Mogo”/LSPA scored 38 points in 23 games, “Kurbads” has 31 points in 24 games, 29 points in 24 games belong to the fifth Place is taken by “Prism”, but the hockey school “Rīga” is in sixth place with 27 points in 24 games.
The OHL’s most important four-round tournament ends on February 28th, after which the OHL and Baltic champions will be determined in the playoff tournament. Six teams reach the OHL playoffs. In the 2023/2024 season, Riga “Prizma”, Hockey School “Rīga”, “Zemgale”/LBTU from Jelgava, “Mogo”/LSPA and “Kurbads” from Latvia, “Kaunas City” and Elektrēnu “Airwell-Energija” will take part take part in the Baltic Championship”, Vilnius “7BET-Hockey Punks” from Lithuania and the Estonian club “Panter” from Tallinn.
Also this season, citizens of Ukraine will not be granted the status of legionnaires or foreign hockey players in the OHL championship, but players from Russia and Belarus are not allowed to participate in the OHL. Last year “Zemgale”/LBTU became champions, defeating “Mogo”/LSPA in the final with 4:1 and thus four wins.
