New Delhi ∙ Former Union minister Milind Deva joined the Shiv Sena and dealt a blow to the Congress just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. The exchange took place on the day Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyaya Yatra began in Manipur. Political observers say the party faces a challenge as Congress leaders continue to look for opportunities closer to the elections.
The Congress, which is trying to consolidate opposition parties’ unity across the ‘India’ front ahead of the general elections, is in a position to ensure that its own leaders do not fall. Deva took to social media to end the 55-year relationship with the Congress while joining the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.
Milind Deva is the latest member of the ‘Rahul Gandhi team’ to join various parties of the Congress. Since 2019, nine prominent leaders have quit the Congress, including Jyotiraditya Scindia.
Milind Deva
Milind is the son of former Union Minister Murali Devra. Milind’s move comes amid the possibility of the Shiv Sena’s Uddhav faction, an ally, capturing the Lok Sabha seat in south Mumbai, which has been held by the Congress and the Deva family for more than five decades . Milind was a Union minister in the UPA government.
Hardik Patel
Hardik Patel, leader of the Patel faction in Gujarat and former sitting president of the Congress, has ended his relationship with the Congress in May 2022. A month later, he joined the BJP. Hardik, who entered state politics through the agitation of the Patel community, joined the Congress ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Hardik’s resignation came after intense criticism of Congress leaders for not being interested in people’s problems and focusing on distributing chicken sandwiches to leaders coming from Delhi and messages on mobile phones.
Ashwini Kumar
In 2022, former Union minister Ashwini Kumar resigned from the Congress ahead of the Punjab assembly elections. Patiyarakam alleged that the party member had been trying to silence him for 46 years.
Ashwani Kumar, who had been a member of the UPA cabinet since 2009, had to resign on May 10, 2013 following allegations of falsification in the CBI report on the coalfield and a court reprimand. Ashwani Kumar was one of Sonia Gandhi’s confidants.
When 23 senior leaders sent a letter demanding a correction in the party, he was among the leaders who heavily criticized him. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2002 to 2016. He is also considered one of the youngest attorneys general in the country.
Sunil Jhakar
Former Punjab Congress president Sunil Jhakar will quit the party in 2022. Jhakar was suspended for two years by the Congress for making a public statement against former Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi. He leaves the party after this action. Sunil, son of prominent Congress leader Balram Jhakar, former Lok Sabha Speaker, is now in the BJP.
RPN Singh
Just before the 2022 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, prominent leader RPN Singh left the Congress and joined the BJP. Singh, who is also a former Union minister, quit the party saying she was sidelined after Priyanka Gandhi took over the Congress’s election campaign.
Jyotiraditya Scindia
Jyotiraditya Scindia, the son of Madhavrao Scindia, a prominent Congress leader, became a leading youth leader. In July 2020, he overthrew the Kamal Nath-led Congress government in Madhya Pradesh and joined the BJP with his supporters. This also helped the BJP consolidate its rule in Madhya Pradesh. Now he is a Union minister.
Jitin Prasada
AICC general secretary and former Union minister Jitin Prasada was a leading member of the G23 group who wrote to Sonia Gandhi to restore the Congress. He is the son of former Union Minister Jitendra Prasad. Prasada, who is known to be close to Rahul Gandhi, joined the BJP just months before the June 2021 UP assembly elections.
Alpesh Thakur
Alpesh, a Congress MP from Radhanpur in Gujarat, will join the BJP in 2019. Although he lost to the Congress in the subsequent by-elections, he won from Gandhinagar South in last year’s elections on a BJP ticket.
Anil Anthony
At a time when the Congress is stepping up its attack on the BJP in national politics, senior leader AK Antony’s son Anil Antony quit the Congress. Anil explained that the decision to join the BJP was “difficult but there was an opportunity to do something constructive”. Anil joined the BJP in January last year.
