Can the Eyes Reveal the Early Signs of Cognitive Decline?
Eyes: The Window to Brain Health
The eyes are often referred to as the windows to our souls, but they may also provide valuable insight into the health of our brains. Recent research suggests that problems with visual sensitivity could be an early indicator of cognitive decline and even predict dementia years before it is diagnosed.
The Study: Unveiling Clues Through Visual Sensitivity
A groundbreaking study conducted in Norfolk, England, followed 8,623 initially healthy individuals over several years. By the end of the study, 537 participants had developed dementia. Analyzing their earlier assessments allowed researchers to identify potential precursors to this neurological disorder.
- Participants were initially asked to take a visual sensitivity test at the onset of the study.
- The test involved pressing a button upon perceiving a forming triangle amidst moving dots on a screen.
- It was observed that those who later developed dementia exhibited significantly slower response times in recognizing these triangles compared to those who remained unaffected by cognitive decline.
This raises an intriguing question: why does impaired visual sensitivity precede memory-related symptoms?
The Connection between Vision and Cognition
One plausible explanation lies in Alzheimer’s disease pathology. The toxic amyloid plaques associated with this neurodegenerative condition may initially affect brain areas responsible for vision processing before spreading further into memory-associated regions throughout its progression. Consequently, deficits in vision tests may manifest prior to impairments observed in standard memory assessments.
In addition to visual sensitivity issues, Alzheimer’s disease can also impact other aspects of visual processing:
- Contrast Sensitivity: Difficulties discerning outlines and details of objects
- Color Perception: Impaired ability to differentiate colors, particularly within the blue-green spectrum, which can be an early sign of dementia
It is worth noting that these visual impairments may significantly impact individuals’ lives without their immediate awareness.
Beyond Vision: Exploring Eye Movements and Cognitive Decline
Evidence suggests that eye movement patterns could also shed light on cognitive decline:
The Role of Eye Movements in Recognizing Faces
Social interactions heavily rely on facial recognition. People with dementia may not mirror the common scanning pattern when looking at others’ faces—typically from eyes to nose to mouth. Instead, they may appear lost or fail to purposefully move their eyes to explore the face of someone they have just met.
This inability to imprint faces through effective eye movements could partly explain later issues in recognizing people—an early indicator related more closely to impaired eye movement than pure memory deficits.
The Potential of Eye Movement for Memory Enhancement
Interestingly, visual sensitivity is strongly associated with memory performance—even when assessed using non-visual tests. Researchers are currently investigating whether increasing deliberate eye movements can improve memory function in older individuals suffering from cognitive decline.
Preliminary findings suggest that activities such as watching TV and reading could positively impact memory due to the constant back-and-forth eye movements required during these tasks. Moreover, individuals who engage in frequent reading tend to have longer educational backgrounds, which establishes a brain reserve capacity capable of mitigating damage caused by deteriorating neural connections.
Further studies indicate that rapid horizontal eye movements (two per second) can enhance autobiographical memory recall; however, it appears this benefit predominantly applies to right-handed individuals—a phenomenon still awaiting scientific explanation.
The Road Ahead: Harnessing Eye Movement Technology
While eye movement-based interventions for memory problems remain relatively unexplored in older populations, the potential it holds is immense. Yet, certain limitations hinder its widespread implementation:
- Accessibility to costly and complex eye-tracking technologies poses a significant challenge.
- Training requirements make it impractical beyond laboratory settings.
Until affordable and user-friendly eye trackers become readily available, leveraging eye movements as a diagnostic tool for early detection of Alzheimer’s disease remains elusive outside of research facilities.
Innovative Approach: Uncovering Clues through the Eyes
The eyes may hold secrets that precede apparent signs of cognitive decline. From impaired visual sensitivity to altered eye movement patterns in facial recognition and memory processes, these observations could pave the way for revolutionary advancements in dementia detection and intervention strategies.
As we continue unraveling the mysteries within our minds, exploring how our eyes interact with our brains provides a promising avenue towards understanding neurological disorders more comprehensively than ever before.

Reflections on the 2023-24 Season: A Message of Gratitude from Ibaraki Robots
Thank you for your continued support.
Today, May 5 (Sunday), the official match schedule of the 2023-24 season of Ibaraki Robots concluded with the match against Utsunomiya Brex.
Record: 12 wins, 48 losses, 8th place in the East region. We apologized for worrying everyone, but in the end we were able to continue successfully in B1, making it a season we are proud of.
Before the start of the season, we set the slogan “Agaroo 4000” and set the following goals: 1. Reach an average attendance of 4,000 people and advance to the B.LEAGUE PREMIER (entry), 2. Improve your results (35 wins ), and 3. Liven up the place I came from.
Consequentially,
① Thanks to the promoters, sponsors, government, local organizations and everyone involved, the average number of participants was 4,619 and with a turnover of over 1.2 billion yen (estimated) and the renovation budget of the arena approved by the City Council of Mito, B. We have a certain prospect of entering the .LEAGUE PREMIER.
② Record: 12 wins, 48 losses, 8th place in the East region, 22nd place overall. Halfway through the season we revised our goal from 35 wins to remaining in B1 and we managed to reach the minimum objective.
③The Robots Boosters’ enthusiastic support and their performances in home games have been praised by many other clubs. Regardless of whether the team is home or away, I think the level of support for the Robots has gone up a notch this season.
Thanks to the effects of the World Cup held last summer, I heard a lot about basketball and robots on the streets this past season, and I noticed that I had more opportunities to see people wearing posters, banners and gadgets. I am here.
The fact that we have managed to grow so much as a club over the course of a season is thanks to the support and encouragement of our sponsors, fans and supporters, local residents and everyone involved. On behalf of the club I would like to thank you once again. A thousand thanks.
Next season will be Robots’ 10th anniversary. Looking to the B.LEAGUE PREMIER, which will begin in two years, we must make this a season of further evolution.
I hope we will continue to work together to create a club called Ibaraki Robots. We look forward to your continued support next season.

Reflections on the 2023-24 Season: A Message of Gratitude from Ibaraki Robots
Candida auris is spreading in Germany – what you need to know
In 2023, Candida auris was detected 77 times nationwide – that was six times more common than in previous years, according to the evaluation by the National Reference Center for Invasive Fungal Infections (NRZMyk), based in Jena. The yeast fungus, which was only discovered in 2009, can be transmitted between people and is immune to various medications.
Mushroom dangerous for people with previous illnesses and immunocompromised people
“We are currently assuming with a high degree of certainty that this is a real increase in the number of cases and not a ‘better recording’, said Oliver Kurzai from the Institute for Hygiene and Microbiology at the University of Würzburg, who is also head of the NRZMyk. So far, the reference center is not aware of any deaths in Germany that can be directly attributed to an infection with the yeast fungus.
Nevertheless, the fungus is dangerous, especially for people who are previously ill or have a weakened immune system. According to Kurzai, in addition to bloodstream infections (“fungal sepsis”), infections of prostheses and foreign materials in the body caused by Candida auris are particularly threatening and difficult to treat, such as infections of joint prostheses.
Researchers are pushing for a general obligation to report Candida auris
The research team led by Alexander M. Aldejohann from the University of Würzburg published the increase in the number of cases in Germany in the Epidemiological Bulletin of the Robert Koch Institute. Only some of these cases were recorded as part of the reporting requirement introduced in 2023, as this only applies to certain infections.
A further increase in the number of cases in Germany must be assumed as likely; a general reporting requirement for every laboratory finding could slow down the spread of the fungus. It also recommends comprehensive testing for Candida auris.
Candida auris is transmitted through smear infections – blood poisoning is also possible
The fungus usually does not affect healthy people. It can become a problem in hospitals and care facilities, especially in intensive care units. Transmission occurs via smear infections.
The pathogen does not spread through the air, such as the coronavirus. “If Candida auris gets into your bloodstream, there is a risk of blood poisoning, which is fatal in just over half of all cases,” the researchers write.
Sepsis manifests itself, among other things
Fever, acute confusion, shortness of breath, low or falling blood pressure and rapid pulse
Sepsis is a medical emergency and must be treated immediately. Every hour without medical care increases the risk of death.
Symptoms after infection with Candida auris
The symptoms after an infection with Candida auris vary. According to the portal “Netdoktor.de”, they can resemble symptoms that are similar to infections with other fungi or bacteria. This is what the fungus can do, among other things
Ear infections with pain, itching and overheating, wound infections with redness, swelling and pain, painful urinary tract infections with burning, urgency and cloudy urine
trigger.
Clinics mainly affected by outbreaks
In 58 of 77 cases registered in Germany last year, the patients were infected with the fungus. According to the scientists, infection occurred in 13 other cases. In 6 cases the status is unclear. Of the colonized patients or those with unclear infection status, 5 would have developed an invasive infection later on. The most common infections were therefore
Wound and tissue infections, bloodstream and catheter-associated infections, prosthesis infections.
Treating Candida auris is difficult because the fungus is resistant to many agents
It is said that the increase in Candida auris is primarily due to three outbreaks. “The enormous increase in 2023 surprised us. Outbreaks in hospitals are particularly crucial here. If these are not recognized early and combated adequately, they will be very difficult to get under control later,” explained Aldejohann.
The yeast Candida auris, which was only discovered in 2009, has quickly spread internationally. From the beginning, the extremely stubborn pathogen was resistant to some antimycotics – drugs that combat fungal infections – and some disinfectants. According to “Netdoktor.de”, doctors would therefore have to combine several active ingredients against fungal diseases in high doses.
