“We have already agreed with our Estonian colleagues to restore the tradition of the Livonia Cup by organizing a match between the champion teams of both countries at the beginning of last year.
Thanks to the initiative of the management of the Estonian Football Association, we have created the opportunity to further develop this cup competition and give it even greater added value.
In discussions with clubs, we come to the conclusion that the availability of such games is very useful for them and therefore hope that the upcoming games will not only help clubs better prepare for the new season, but also provide a basis for the create further preservation and appreciation of this historic competition,” said Vadims Lashenko, President of the Latvian Football Federation (LFF), as quoted on the LFF website.
“It’s a great opportunity to test our league level compared to our neighbors.
In contrast to the domestic winter tournament, there is a points competition between the countries here. This will make it clear which country will win,” added Anne Reja, general secretary of the Estonian Football Association (EJL).
Previously, the champions of Latvia and Estonia met in the Livonia Cup, which determined the strongest team of the two Baltic states seven times – 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2011, 2018 and 2023.
Now, for the first time in history, it will be organized as a comprehensive pre-season tournament, which will also take place annually.
