The army has already managed to kill dozens of terrorists responsible for making and storing explosives, and long-range rocket launchers were discovered during military operations in the city of Hanyounis.
The Israel Defense Forces also announced Monday that it will soon rotate some of the more than 300,000 reservists drafted after Oct. 7, in part to prepare them for several more months of war.
Officials said reservists from two brigades of about 4,000 soldiers each would begin returning home this week.
Defense Minister Yoav Galant also said some Israelis will soon be able to return to their homes in towns and villages near the Gaza Strip that were evacuated after a Hamas terrorist attack in early October.
However, the Israeli government has so far refused to clarify its plans for the situation in Gaza after the war and for the restoration and administration of the territory.
The US news portal Axios, citing anonymous sources in Israel, announced that Hamas presented Israel with a new proposal for a hostage exchange on Sunday through Qatari and Egyptian intermediaries.
The official told the media that the Israeli war cabinet called this offer unacceptable, but believed that progress could be made in the future and a more satisfactory option could be agreed upon.
According to the Israeli army, 173 of its soldiers have been killed in the fight against Hamas so far. An incident in which an Israeli soldier allegedly shot a captured Palestinian is also being investigated.
Heavy bombardments in the central and southern parts of the Gaza Strip have caused widespread damage. According to government officials, more than 200 people have been killed in Hamas in the past 24 hours. The total death toll in Gaza has exceeded 22,000, Qatar-based newspaper Al Jazeera reported.
Violence has also increased in the occupied West Bank. Four Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces in the latest clash on Tuesday, the ministry said.
The Israeli army said it happened during an “anti-terror” operation in which four militants were shot dead and one was injured. The troops reportedly “neutralized” a Palestinian militant who fired on them in the city of Qalqilya.
During Gaza’s bloodiest war to date, Israel received solid support from its ally, the United States. At the same time, however, Washington called on Tel Aviv to show greater restraint in order to save the lives of civilians.
The Pentagon announced Monday that it would soon recall the naval aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford, which has been stationed near Lebanon since the war began.
Although the ship is leaving its current location, it will continue to have a wide range of combat capabilities in the Mediterranean and throughout the Middle East region.
CONTEXT:
Terrorists from the Palestinian Islamist group “Hamas” launched a surprise attack from the Gaza Strip on the morning of October 7th. About 1,400 Israelis, mostly civilians, were killed in the massacre. Hamas militants also captured more than 240 people and took them to the Gaza Strip.
Israel imposed martial law in the country and launched extensive air and artillery strikes against Hamas targets in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip. Ground troops are also involved in the fighting. For several weeks, Israel also imposed a full blockade of the Gaza Strip, cutting off electricity and water supplies to the area and restricting humanitarian aid deliveries.
At least 1.1 million people have been internally displaced in the Gaza Strip since the beginning of October. A large number have fled to the south of the territory, many are seeking refuge in hospitals. At least 100 UN staff and around 50 journalists were also killed during the conflict.
Israel says fighting in Gaza will continue until the Hamas terrorist group is completely destroyed, accusing Hamas of hiding behind a shield of civilians and civilian infrastructure.
Meanwhile, the international community has repeatedly called on Israel to avoid civilian casualties as much as possible and to introduce humanitarian pauses in the Gaza Strip.
