Ilan Van Wilder is only 23 years old, but he knows what he wants and always speaks plainly. He also did this on Tuesday at the Soudal-Quick Step team presentation. The young climber wants to go on the tour, is given opportunities to realize his own ambitions and fails again because of the merger plans.
Ilan Van Wilder opens 2024 in Mallorca and has “a great chance of placing in the UAE Tour”.
“Paris-Nice follows with Remco (Evenepoel). We start with a good team. The main goal is to do very well there.”
On the Tour of Catalonia and the Tour de Romandie he gets a new chance for personal success. “At Soudal – Quick Step I get a nice combination of my own opportunities and help. I find a good balance there.”
“It builds every year and I try to take a step every year. That works well.”
Van Wilder also wants to go on tour. “That is not sure. I’m in the big preselection. Let’s hope so. There are a lot of strong guys there. I really see a strong team for the big tours.”
Ilan Van Wilder had a great autumn with wins in Germany and Italy. He won the Tre Valli Varesine during the Merger Soap and clearly showed his disgust after this victory.
“It was a very unclear time in which everyone gave up. We were in Italy with a large part of the team and the atmosphere wasn’t very good. The ignorance and lack of clarity have made things difficult for us.”
“I don’t regret the emotions I showed. I said my thoughts and I’m happy with it.”
“I stood up for my teammates and the staff. I hope that maybe it did something, but I’m very glad it didn’t.”
“There were conversations throughout the whole thing and shortly afterwards,” Van Wilder adds. “There was a lot going on above our heads.”
“We are employees and when push comes to shove, unfortunately we don’t mean much. It’s hard, but that’s life.”
