Former top coach Sven-Göran Eriksson (75), who was England coach for five years and coached Roma, Sampdoria, Lazio and Manchester City, among others, revealed on Swedish radio that he was suffering from terminal cancer. “I’m not feeling well. Everyone suspected I had cancer, and that’s true. “I only have a year left to live at most,” he said on Swedish radio.
Sven-Göran Eriksson, now 75, suddenly resigned from his position as Karlstad’s sporting director earlier this year for health reasons. The former top trainer has now provided clarity on the Swedish radio station P1, although unfortunately he had to deliver bad news.
“Everyone understood that I was sick and that it was not good. The suspicion was that it was cancer, and that was true. I have to fight as long as I can.”
When asked about the prognosis, Eriksson came up with particularly sad news. “I still have a year at best. Maybe a little less, maybe a little more. You can’t be completely sure. It’s better not to think about it. They don’t know exactly how long I had the disease: maybe a month, maybe a year.”
“You can trick your brain by seeing the positive in things and not wallowing in setbacks. Of course that’s the biggest possible setback, but even then you can still make something good out of it.”
There are now numerous expressions of support for Eriksson from the football world.
