The Naše Vlast party has six representatives in the 199-member Hungarian parliament.
“If this war ends with Ukraine losing its statehood, because that is also on the table, then I would like to say on behalf of the only Hungarian party that represents this position that we claim the Zakarpattia region,” Toroczkai said on Saturday at the party conference.
“As far as the war in Ukraine is concerned, our message is very simple: an immediate ceasefire, peace and a negotiated solution,” added the head of the Naše Vlast party, which calls for at least autonomy for ethnic Hungarians in Transcarpathia.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó will hold talks with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba and Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal in Uzhhorod on Monday to prepare for possible meetings between Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Zakarpattia is home to about 150,000 ethnic Hungarians, and Budapest claims Kiev is restricting their right to use their native language.
Transcarpathia originally belonged to Hungary, but after the First World War fell to the newly emerging Czechoslovakia.
During World War II, Transcarpathia was annexed to Hungary by Nazi Germany’s ally, Regent Miklós Horthy, and after the war this territory fell to the Soviet Union. Since the collapse of the USSR, Zakarpattia has been part of Ukraine.
Szijjártó received a threatening email in Ukrainian before his trip to Uzhhorod, his department said
