Hugo Sigal (76), the sponsor of the Alzheimer Research Foundation – Stopalzheimer, presented the foundation in the Hestia nursing home in Wemmel with a check for 5,000 euros. This is the proceeds from the cupcake campaign that Nicole and Hugo’s famous Wemmel resident started in September. Nicole Josy, Hugo’s partner, died in November 2022. She was 76 years old and suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.
Armonea, the umbrella company for 74 nursing homes in our country, held a cupcake sale to benefit the Alzheimer Research Foundation. It was no coincidence that the campaign began in September last year at the WZC Hestia in Wemmel. “I live in Wemmel and am a real Wemmel resident,” says Peter Hugo Sigal from the Alzheimer Research Foundation. “Nicole’s mother also lived here in Hestia for years. Nicole and I visited her every day. I started the cupcake campaign here in September and had a lot of fun baking and decorating.”
“It was very bright with all these colors and decorations. We were very happy about the cupcakes because at the end we now have 5,000 euros left. We want to repeat the campaign at the end of this year. We also want to organize some things for the benefit of Alzheimer’s patients.” Sigal wants to do more against Alzheimer’s. “Something definitely needs to be done. It should be something like “Stand Up Against Cancer,” but then “Stand Up Against Alzheimer’s.” I hope that one day we can achieve this together with the Alzheimer Research Foundation.”
Director Joost Martens from the Alzheimer Research Foundation is very pleased with the proceeds from the cupcake campaign. “Every euro that we can invest in Alzheimer’s research pays off,” says Martens. “Around 70 percent of nursing home residents suffer from some form of dementia. “It is a brain disorder in which a person’s physical and mental condition slowly but surely deteriorates and they eventually become completely dependent on the care of others.”
“No medication”
“Approximately one in seven men and even one in three women develop some form of dementia. There are currently 141,000 people with dementia in Flanders and Brussels. If nothing is done, the number of people with Alzheimer’s in Belgium will almost double in 2046 because there are no medications yet. That’s why scientific research is necessary,” says Sigal.
The Alzheimer Research Foundation’s sale of forget-me-not pins raised 100,000 euros in December. This money also goes towards scientific research. “I am very grateful to everyone, because a future without Alzheimer’s has moved a little closer,” concludes Peter from the Hugo Sigal Foundation.
