Eric Xu, Vice President of Huawei and Rotating Chairman during his opening speech at HAS 2024 |
At the 21st Huawei Analyst Summit, Huawei Rotating Chairman Eric Xu urged developers to collaborate on the development of native applications for the company’s mobile operating system HarmonyOS. “We call on all app developers and owners in China to join our HarmonyOS native app ecosystem as soon as possible, and work together to provide a better experience for consumers,” Xu said.
HarmonyOS is the company’s next-generation operating system that can run on a wide range of smart devices, such as smartphones, wearables, tablets and smart TVs. By the end of 2023, HarmonyOS had been deployed on over 800 million devices.
According to Counterpoint Research Harmony OS reaches 4% global market share and exceeds 16% market share in China in the fourth quarter of 2023.
Huawei has made substantial progress in developing the HarmonyOS ecosystem, with more than 4,000 of the targeted 5,000 applications already in the process of being ported to the new operating system. The company aims to eventually have up to one million apps configured for its ecosystem, Xu said.
Xu presented that HarmonyOS has a new architecture. From the ground up, this IoT-inspired operating system was designed to support all types of devices, from Internet of Things and mobile devices to home devices, laptops and desktops. One system for all devices.
“In the past, we mainly focused on adapting HarmonyOS for all kinds of devices. But for apps, they were still working in the Android ecosystem,” Xu said. “In the Chinese market, Huawei smartphone users spend 99% of their time on around 5,000 apps. So we decided to spend 2024 porting these apps to HarmonyOS first in our Drive in order to truly unify the operating system and app ecosystem,” Xu said.
“In 2024, one of our main goals is to build the HarmonyOS native application ecosystem,” he emphasized. “This is a massive undertaking, but we have broad support in the industry and many app developers. Once we have these first 5,000 Android apps – and thousands of other apps – up and running on HarmonyOS, we will have a true HarmonyOS: a third mobile operating system for the world, in addition to Apple iOS and Google Android. “
While Huawei’s initial focus is on the Chinese market, Xu said the company will gradually expand HarmonyOS to other countries using a country-by-country approach.
Huawei has already invested heavily in cultivating talent for the HarmonyOS ecosystem. More than 380,000 developers have obtained HarmonyOS certification, and the number of industry-university partnership programs on HarmonyOS exceeds 150. By 2023, more than 135 universities in China had HarmonyOS teaching classes, the company’s annual report said of the year 2023 made public at the end of March.
In August 2023, Huawei’s HongMeng (Harmony) core received the industry’s first Evaluation Assurance Level 6 Augmented (EAL6+) certificate under the Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Assessment (CC), the highest level of security available in the field of general-purpose operating system (OS) kernels, to be the first smart device manufacturer in the world to receive certification in this particular area.
Indeed, Xu admits that building the HarmonyOS ecosystem is a very difficult task. “As you may know, the development of HarmonyOS was not part of our strategy previously,” he said. “Be that as it may, now that we have undertaken this task, we will endeavor to do it well.”

The last model produced during Enzo Ferrari’s lifetime
The Ferrari F40, the last model produced during Enzo Ferrari’s lifetime, is appreciated for its simplicity of design. However, according to Internet users, restoring it to its original condition may be complicated. The car, worth over EUR 3 million, must undergo renovation, which may cost up to 1/3 of this amount.
The Ferrari F40, which debuted in 1987 on the 40th anniversary of the Maranello-based company, is powered by a 2.9-liter V8 engine with two turbochargers. This configuration generates a total power of 478 HP and the maximum vehicle speed is 320 km per hour. Only 1,315 units of this model were produced during five years of production.

Force majeure notice to Pakistan by Chinese company working on Dasu project – Business & Economy
Almost two weeks after the terrorist attack on Chinese engineers in Shangla, the Chinese company working on the Dasu Hydropower Project has issued a ‘force majeure’ notice to Pakistan.
This notice is a big blow for Pakistan.
A force majeure notice is usually issued after a natural disaster and means that an event has occurred that was beyond the control of the contracting parties and has resulted in the work not being completed or not being completed on time. The party concerned cannot be held responsible.
On March 26, a suicide bomber rammed a convoy of Chinese engineers traveling from Islamabad to Dasu, killing five Chinese engineers and their Pakistani driver.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry demanded a comprehensive investigation from Pakistan and punishment of those responsible for the attack, besides ensuring the security of Chinese citizens.
The Chinese company is laying a 765 kV transmission line. Sources say the project is already behind the World Bank deadline and the new notice may increase its cost.
Following the Chinese company’s notice, Daso’s chief engineer has sought guidance from NTDC’s chief law officer.
He said that the Chinese company says that the work has been affected after the attack, which may further slow down and may even be suspended.
