After braving the long security line and praying not to miss your flight, you finally sit on the plane. Only to find out that the person sitting next to you is a nightmare. But what should we do in situations where we feel annoyed or uncomfortable? We designed various scenarios and presented them to the Swiss airline Edelweiss and Nicole Veser, an expert in good manners. Here they are with their explanations and advice.
Scenario #1: The person sitting next to you is drunk
Is the person sitting next to you clearly on his third beer and fourth glass of wine and starting to make you uncomfortable? In this case you should consult the cabin crew. “If possible, the crew on board will try to find another seat if a passenger feels uncomfortable,” said Andreas Meier, spokesman for the Edelweiss company.
Good to know: Flight attendants may refuse to serve alcohol to a passenger who behaves inappropriately.
If the person sitting next to you raises your elbow a little too easily, you can always contact the cabin crew who will try to find a solution.

Scenario #2: Your neighbor in the middle seat is using both armrests
Have you ever wondered who each armrest on an airplane is for? According to the Edelweiss company, there are no rules as to which passenger can use which armrest.
Nicole Veser, an expert on good manners, also confirms this. “In a three-seat row, it is customary for the person in the middle seat to have the right to use the two middle armrests,” she explains. People who sit on both sides therefore have to make do with the armrests on the window or aisle side.

Scenario #3: The person sitting next to you leans over you to take a photo through the window
If the passenger sitting next to you leans forward to look out the window and admire the sunrise, that’s definitely not a problem. But what if that person is occupying your space and holding their phone just a few millimeters from your face?
Andreas Meier and Nicole Veser agree on this point: You have to talk to the person in question and gently point out to them that it bothers you. If this has no effect, it is best to contact the cabin crew. Another option: “If you’re willing to give up your window seat to your neighbor, I would suggest that person swap seats,” suggests the good manners expert.

Scenario #4: The passenger sitting in front of you reclines the backrest
Since space on an airplane is already limited, it’s never comfortable when the passenger sitting in front of you keeps their seat in a reclined position throughout the flight.
But is it allowed? “In principle, every passenger has the right to tilt their seat backwards during the flight,” explains Andreas Meier. However, during the service, cabin crew asks passengers to straighten their seat backs.
Out of consideration for other passengers, you must raise your seat back while eating on board.
