Suspect Standoff on Interstate 80 in Solano County
On a Friday evening, two lanes of traffic on eastbound Interstate 80 at Green Valley Road in Solano County reopened after California Highway Patrol deputies engaged in a standoff with a suspect. The westbound lanes were also reopened around 6:45 p.m.
Standoff Details
CHP pursued the suspect’s vehicle on the freeway until it stopped in the slow lane of the eastbound side of I-80 near Fairfield. The standoff concluded just after 6:30 p.m. The suspect sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition as of 11 p.m. on Friday.
Incident Timeline
By 3:45 p.m., the vehicle had come to a halt at Green Valley Road near the Interstate 680 connector, leading to traffic being halted on both sides of I-80. NBC Bay Area reported that the pursuit originated around 2 p.m. in Rohnert Park, Sonoma County. Earlier in the day, a woman reported a shot fired at her vehicle on southbound Highway 101 near Windsor, matching the suspect’s description and license plate.
During the pursuit, officers utilized spike strips, with the driver crossing one on Interstate 80 just west of Cordelia Junction. The incident caused significant traffic delays, impacting various individuals, including 259 students and six adult chaperones from the Rocklin Unified School District who were stranded for hours on their way back from a field trip to Six Flags Discover Kingdom in Vallejo.
Impact on Students
Despite the park closing at 6 p.m., the buses carrying the students were stuck in the traffic, leaving them without access to food or water. The buses eventually arrived around 7:45 p.m. to pick up the stranded students.
