For some, buying a cup of coffee on the way to work is routine, but the coffee you choose can make a difference to your wallet.
Trd.by was out in January 2024 and examined the prices.
Check out the overview of the case below.
Opening of a new cafe – 50 meters from the previous one
May amount to thousands
In the overview, Trd.by checked the prices in six different cafes in Midtbyen. We compared these to the 2023 MN24 numbers at the same chains.
We looked at the numbers for a small black coffee, a coffee latte and an espresso.
Between some chains there is a difference of more than 10 NOK for the same type of coffee.
If you buy a cup every business day (230 days a year), this is the change if you choose the most expensive or cheapest coffee each day:
Annual price (230 cups) Most expensive Cheapest difference Coffee Latte 14,490 NOK 11,500 to 2,990 NOK Small black coffee 10,810 NOK 8,510 to 2,300 NOK Espresso 8,740 NOK 5,750 to 2,990 NOK
If you choose the cheapest espresso in town instead of the most expensive latte macchiato, you can save NOK 8,740 per year.

Prices have increased
Last year the Espresso House had the most expensive cup of coffee latte at NOK 56. This year Starbucks has the most expensive cup of coffee latte, which now costs NOK 63.
In general, all coffee chains have increased their prices in the past year. On average, prices have risen by around eight percent, but there are clear differences:
Will keep prices low
Café le Frère saw the biggest price increase compared to last year, but is still the cheapest when comparing prices for the three different cups overall.
– The prices we had last year were just way too low. We have a philosophy that everyone should be able to buy a cup of coffee, but like everyone else, we’ve had higher costs over the past year. That’s why we had to increase the price of something, says general manager Kjell Harry Lyngaas.

The price for a cup of espresso has, of course, remained unchanged since 2016.
– It costs 25 NOK. It took eight years. “We have high standards for our espresso, so it’s important to us that everyone can enjoy a cup of it,” says Lyngaas.
He says that they will continue to try to keep prices as low as possible.
– Coffee is also social. A visit to a café means a lot to many people. We have the philosophy that it should be possible to drink a cup of coffee anywhere in life.

Inflation affects the price
Starbucks has both the most expensive latte coffee (63 NOK), espresso (38 NOK) and a small cup of black coffee (47 NOK).
Communications director Sofie Oraug-Rygh says Starbucks’ prices are based on the purchase price of the coffee they use in the chain.
– At Starbucks, we care about supporting the environment and sustainability. We are proud of our coffee. Our prices ensure, among other things, that our coffee farmers receive good working conditions. “We have strict guidelines for fair trade along the entire value chain,” she says.
– What is the reason why their prices have increased compared to last year?
– The world market price for coffee has risen. We put a lot into our coffee, and if the price of coffee goes up, that can likely cause the price of our coffees to rise more than others, she says.
