Around 150,000 people in Switzerland are affected by heart failure. And 12 to 15,000 new people are diagnosed every year. In the canton of Neuchâtel there are between 350 and 400 hospital admissions for heart failure every year. It is also a leading cause of hospitalization. This public health issue will be the focus of next Thursday’s conference of the Neuchâtel hospital network. Cyril Pellaton, chief physician of the RHNe cardiology department, recalled on Tuesday in La Matinale that the heart is an organ “that can be represented as a muscular pump that allows blood to be transported to all other organs of the body.” » From one Heart failure is when the heart is no longer able to pump enough blood into the circulatory system. “And in the end, heart failure occurs, which limits the patient’s physical performance. » Many causes lead to heart failure. “One of the most common causes is disease of the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart. » High blood pressure is another very common cause. The symptoms are varied, such as difficulty breathing, especially during exercise, fatigue or weight gain. “It is a pathology that must be considered serious, sometimes fatal. But heart failure remains treatable. » Great progress has been made in treatment in recent years. “And the prognosis should be viewed as better than it was a few years ago. » The treatments carried out aim to relieve symptoms, slow the progression of the disease and improve the quality of life and survival of patients. A healthy lifestyle is also important. “Patients are recommended not to consume too much salt, no more than four to six grams per day, of course not to smoke and to consume alcohol in moderation.” We also favor the so-called Mediterranean diet and especially limit red meat . We also recommend that they carefully check their vital signs, especially weighing themselves every morning and measuring their pulse and blood pressure, to be able to detect the progression of the disease.
The conference on heart failure will take place this Thursday from 7 p.m. in the RhNe Auditorium in Neuchâtel. Also follow on the hospital’s Facebook page. /sma
