In Hatfield, a tragic incident unfolded as a bear was suspected of dragging the body of a crash victim from his vehicle on Sunday, according to State Police reports.
The victim, identified as 31-year-old Daniel Ducharme from South Hadley, likely lost his life in a crash on Route 91 south in Hatfield. Investigators believe he was either fully or partially ejected from the car and subsequently dragged by the bear.
Discovery at the Crash Scene
On Sunday at 11 a.m., a passerby alerted the police after spotting a car in the woods off the road. Troopers arrived to find a severely damaged 2016 Honda Civic among the trees.
State Police mentioned, "When first responders arrived, the deceased male was found outside the vehicle, and a bear was sighted in the nearby woods. It appears that the bear had some interaction with the victim."
The bear fled the scene as troopers approached.
Investigation and Circumstances
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Ducharme was the sole occupant of the car. Authorities suspect he lost control, struck the guardrail multiple times, veered off the road, descended an embankment, and collided with several trees.
Presence of Black Bears in Massachusetts
Hatfield falls within the established range of black bears in Massachusetts. The state is home to an estimated 4,500 bears.
As wildlife officials cautioned in March, bears are emerging from hibernation and foraging for food.

National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin-pyo Introduces ‘Special Prosecutor Chae’ Law Amid Political Neutrality Debate
During the first plenary session of the 414th National Assembly (extraordinary session), held at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, on the 2nd, National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin-pyo introduced the “Law on Special Prosecutor Corporal Chae” ( a bill regarding the appointment of a special prosecutor to find out the truth about the obstruction of investigations into fallen marines and the concealment of incidents, etc.). 2024.5.2. News 1
Kim Jin-pyo, speaker of the National Assembly, criticized the Korean Democratic Party’s candidates to be the next speaker of the National Assembly for declaring that they would not maintain political neutrality if they became president, saying: “If you study more and look history of our National Assembly, whoever said such a thing will be ashamed of himself.”
Chairman Kim said this on MBN Radio’s “Intensive Analysis of Jung Woon-gap (Current Affairs Special)” program on the 5th, saying, “If you continue to have a party affiliation and act like an administration and a president partial, the president will be nothing more than a puppet.”
He explained: “During the political reform of 2002, the President of the National Assembly had to remain neutral to at least check, criticize and supervise the executive branch, so, for example, in the United Kingdom, the President of the National Assembly was prevented from having a party affiliation”.
He added: “Because we have no party affiliation and because we are legally obliged to be neutral, we have the ability to coordinate, listen to both sides and make such efforts across all organizations in the National Assembly on various issues.”
Chairman Kim responded to Democratic Party members’ pressure on him, saying they would go so far as to block his departure if they did not hold a plenary session to vote on the ‘Special Prosecutor Chae Sang-byeong Law’, saying: “Is it because I’ve become too impatient these days, or is it due to the influence of fandom politics or camp politics? I’m attacking you without a doubt.” “I think they say things like that because it’s become a habit,” he pointed out.
He stressed: “We should have recognized and talked about how important the MIKTA meeting is, that it is a Korea-led meeting and that we will be the next country president.” MIKTA is a national consultative body in which Mexico, Indonesia, Korea, Türkiye and Australia participate. Chairman Kim will pay an official visit to Mexico, the host country of the conference, as well as Brazil, Argentina and the United States until the 18th of this month to attend the MIKTA conference.
The President of the National Assembly, elected from among the members of a party in the National Assembly, cannot be a member of the party and cannot vote in the standing commission pursuant to Article 20 paragraph 2 of the Law on the National Assembly. The aim is to maintain political neutrality and practice parliamentarism. However, Democratic Party candidates for the next Speaker of the National Assembly make statements every day that threaten the President’s duty of “political neutrality.”
Choo Mi-ae, a 6-term member-elect of the Democratic Party who ran for President of the National Assembly, said: “The President of the National Assembly is neither left nor right, but neither is neutral”, and for 5 terms. Rep. Jeong Seong-ho, considered the leader of the pro-Myung faction (pro-Lee Jae-myung), also announced his intention to run for president of the National Assembly and said: ” You can’t do anything if you only maintain mechanical neutrality. “As a member of the Democratic Party, we will have to hide our victory in the next election,” said Rep. Jo Jeong-sik, elected to his sixth term a speaker produced by the Democratic Party, and the Democratic Party is the majority party,” and argued: “He must become the Speaker of the National Assembly which reflects public sentiment in the general election.”
