A rare bright spot for KV Kortrijk all season, but today it was complete crap. Tom Vandenberghe offered Tarik Tissoudali a simple equalizer for both goals conceded in the game against KAA Gent and delivered a mea culpa after the game. “It’s my worst game since I played for Kortrijk,” he said afterwards.
An afternoon to quickly forget for Tom Vandenberghe. The KVK goalkeeper has had a strong season so far, but made two painful mistakes against Gent.
The first time after only 7 minutes. When Julien De Sart headed the ball, Vandenberghe released the ball and Tarik Tissoudali fumbled the ball past the goalkeeper and defenders.
But the second mistake was even more egregious. When De Sart collided with a free kick, the goalkeeper again didn’t know what to do and pushed the ball awkwardly in front of him. Once again, Tissoudali unwrapped this gift with joy.

And Vandenberghe? What remained was defeat and a feeling of guilt. “It’s a shame,” he said after the game. “If we don’t concede these two goals, it will be a different game.”
“Ghent may have been better, but I saw my team-mates’ heads sink when they scored the second goal and then we completely disappeared from the game.”
“I would like to apologize to all of Kortrijk. They don’t deserve something like this, especially after the tifo they did for this game,” he continued.
“It’s my worst game since I played for Kortrijk and it’s a shame it has to happen now.”
Even the best goalkeeper in Belgium wouldn’t do much better here.

But the goalkeeper had an explanation for his mistake on the second goal. “I had doubts about whether I should hold on to the ball or punch it away, but as a goalkeeper, as soon as you have doubts, you know it’s a goal.”
“And when you’re already last and keep falling behind, then you know it’s going to be difficult. It just wasn’t a good year and that’s mentally difficult for everyone.”
“It’s good that it’s winter break now. This way everyone can look in the mirror and we can start again after the New Year.”
Obviously affected by the new defeat, the goalkeeper also pushed aside possible criticism. “I put my heart and soul into it and sometimes you play well, but in the end it’s still 0-3 or 0-4. Then people think, ‘He shot 3 again.'”
“But with all due respect, even the best goalkeeper in Belgium wouldn’t do much better here. I’m glad I’ve reached an age where I can place most things, but today it still hurts a lot.”
