“On his first visit, Stéphane Séjourn came to Kiev to continue France’s diplomatic efforts and reaffirm France’s commitment to its allies and civilians,” the French Foreign Ministry wrote on the “X” platform.
Sežurn, who replaced current Foreign Minister Kateryna Colonna this week, plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Unlike his predecessor, the new French foreign minister has no experience in diplomatic work. The 38-year-old politician is a close ally of French President Emmanuel Macron and general secretary of the ruling party Renaissance (RE), which he founded.
On Friday, as he officially began work as French foreign minister, Séjouron said that “helping Ukraine means guaranteeing the victory of democracy.”
A report by the French parliament published in November showed that the country’s military aid to Ukraine had reached 3.2 billion euros.
At the same time, as the war lengthened, the value of military aid promised to Ukraine in August-November last year was less than 90% lower than the corresponding period in 2022, according to the results of a study published by the Kiel Institute in December.
The European Union’s €50 billion aid package is blocked by Hungary, but Republican objections have prevented the US Congress from reaching a new agreement on additional aid for Ukraine.
Zelensky warned that the decline in military aid would have a significant impact on the course of the war.
