How much money do tourists leave in Greek destinations? What countries do they come from and how long do they stay at the destination? These questions are answered by the data of the Bank of Greece (BoG) for 2023.
The traditional European markets for Greek tourism (United Kingdom, Germany, France) and the USA saw significant increases in 2023 in the basic figures (arrivals, overnight stays, receipts) compared to 2022.
More specifically, 3.5% decrease showed the average expenditure per trip (2023: 570.7 euros, 2022: 591.7 euros), as well as the average length of stay, which fell by 11.2% and stood at 6.5 nights (2022: 7.4 nights).
The total number of overnight stays in 2023 showed an increase of 7.3% and amounted to 236,271.2 thousand overnight stays (2022: 220,213.1 thousand overnight stays).

Travel receipts
Travel receipts in 2023 amounted to €20,593.6 million, showing an increase of 16.5% compared to 2022. This development is due to an 11.6% increase in receipts from residents of the EU‑27 countries , which amounted to 11,169.7 million euros, representing 54.2% of all receipts, as well as the 18.3% increase in receipts from residents of other countries, which amounted to 8,576.6 million. euro.
In more detail, receipts from residents of the euro zone countries amounted to 9,065.7 million euros in 2023, showing an increase of 12.5% compared to the previous year, while receipts from residents of the EU‑27 countries outside the zone euros amounted to 2,104.0 million euros, increased by 8.0%.
Regarding the most important countries of origin of travelers, receipts from Germany recorded a rise of 9.7% to 3,571.3 million euros, while receipts from France increased by 11.6% to 1,425.4 million. euro. From the other countries, receipts from the United Kingdom increased by 5.3%, reaching 3,294.4 million euros. Receipts from the USA increased by 14.4% to 1,373.6 million euros, while those from Russia decreased by 21.7% to 32.4 million euros.
The painting
For 2024, Greek tourism is heading for a new revenue record with a number of business sectors expecting a strong injection in their income and financial results as they are directly or indirectly linked to tourism activity.
According to estimates by leading players in Greek tourism, in 2024 a new significant increase in tourist receipts will be recorded both due to the increase in arrivals as the messages are particularly encouraging for almost all the country’s destinations but also due to the increase in accommodation prices.
Industry insiders are optimistic, as they say the response from the big markets of Britain and Germany, as well as other important markets, is significant and will continue to grow.
The “bet” for tourism operators is that enhanced arrivals will be reflected in increased overnight stays, given that the profile of visitors has changed.
