It takes some getting used to: Fabio Jakobsen no longer drives for Quick Step, but for DSM. The 27-year-old Dutchman will sprint in the major tours. “I’m aiming for stage wins at the Giro and the Tour,” he says during an internship in Spain.
After 6 years at Quick Step, Fabio Jakobsen is starting a new chapter in the DSM team.
“I felt comfortable there and enjoyed it, but maybe I felt too comfortable. I notice that a fresh breeze is cheering me on now.”
There was no more room for me. Otherwise I would have liked to stay.

With the arrival of Tim Merlier it became clear that a place in the cockpit of Quick Step was at stake. “There was no more room for me,” explains Jakobsen. “Otherwise I would have liked to stay.”
“It’s a shame, but I won’t leave with sadness or quarrels,” he assures. “I’m very grateful to the Wolf Pack for allowing me to ride there.”
“But still, DSM was another option and maybe in a few years it will turn out to be a better one.”
“Maybe I would have changed anyway,” says Jakobsen. “At Quick Step the tour is now all about Remco (Evenepoel, editor’s note), I think that’s logical.”
“I will still lose to Philipsen, but he will also lose to me”
At DSM-Firmenich Post NL, the Tour de France is an option for Fabio Jakobsen.
“The team is very focused on the sprint,” he notes. “We have a special sprint department that trains together and advises together.”
In the past, the team scored points with Marcel Kittel and John Degenkolb. “As a junior, I saw the tour with Marcel Kittel. His former teammate Roy Curvers now leads our sprint team.”
“They have a sprint heritage here and are fully committed to it,” notes Jakobsen, who wants to score points in the big tours. “I’m aiming for stage wins at the Giro and the Tour.”
“Last year I was pretty good, but to win a lot you have to be great. Look at Jasper Philipsen.”
Can he beat the green jersey? “Certainly,” Jakobsen grins. “Yes, it is.”
“I will lose to him sometimes, but he will also lose to me. This is top sport.”
“Jasper is the man to beat, we will put him under pressure,” promises the Dutchman.
