The manned mission logo is a unique testimony to the development of China’s aerospace industry, and behind it lies the endless innovation and ingenuity of the creator. Since February 2023, China’s manned space program has publicly requested annual mission logos from the entire society for the first time. Enthusiasts from all walks of life participated extensively, contributing their wisdom and enthusiasm and demonstrating the exquisite combination of technology and art. The official platform has specially launched the “Flying Painter’s Record” column, inviting mission logo designers to share their creative journey.
On January 17, 2024, the Tianzhou-7 cargo spacecraft was successfully launched from the Wenchang Space Launch Site in Hainan, which once again attracted the attention of the entire Internet. The designer of the logo of this missionYang QiannanAt the official invitation, I followed the entire launch process on site. As the design concept in her mind became reality, this “Flying Painter” had a deeper experience and understanding. Let’s listen to their voice.

“First of all, as a mission identity designerFollow the launch livehow lucky I am. “
At 8 o’clock in the evening the night sky was clear. In a nervous mood, I took the elevator to the observation deck with the staff in work clothes and found that there were a lot of people waiting here. Although those waiting were busy talking, the huge viewing window seemed to absorb all noise, making the outside world seem particularly peaceful. At this time, it was dark outside, and only the transmission tower that stood quietly in the wilderness was emitting a mysterious blue light. My attention was so completely absorbed that I almost forgot anyone else was there. Over the next two and a half hours, the tower went from closed to open. There is no live TV commentary or preview here, you have to see everything with your own eyes. From time to time I looked at the tower to observe the progress. This was completely different from the experience of sitting in front of the TV, watching high-resolution images and listening to people’s analysis. At 10:20 a.m. it is getting closer and closer to the scheduled start time, but there is no official countdown. After a few more minutes, a voice broke the silence and the countdown changed from 10 seconds to 5 seconds. Everything happened so suddenly and I had been waiting for this moment all night.
“Fire on! Take off!” After the order was given, I dimly saw a little fire, followed by water mist and smoke. As the bright flames fully emerged from the ground, even my eyes had to adjust to the sudden light again. The rocket continued to rise and I heard a loud rumble. The sound was like an action in a movie. At first it illuminated faces, and after a moment of silence the sound rolled in like thunder. By the time the rocket’s tail flame was no longer visible, until only the blue smoke blowing in the wind remained on the launch pad, until I left the observation deck, the shape of the flame was still clearly imprinted in my memory and could no longer be recognized over one evaporate over a longer period of time.

On the way back the crescent moon was low in the western sky. The memory of that night will remain in my heart forever. I am very proud to see that the mission logo I designed can be made into armbands and appear on the work uniforms, ID cards and live broadcasts of scientific researchers. I believe that it is every designer’s goal to leave my mark on such a big event and I am so happy that I achieved that.
Yang Qiannan at the starting point
“Where does the inspiration for creation come from? Science fiction is the source, and there is no end to learning.”
If there is one film and television work that inspired me to pursue a career in art, it was The Lord of the Rings. In my heart, pursuing art is not just a film, but for me it is also an educational work. The shocking epic feeling, the majestic atmosphere and the excellent assembly techniques have impressed me to this day and also shaped my pursuit of a strong sense of form, space and layering. I want my work to be calm and powerful. Therefore, when creating the mission logo, I tried my best to create this atmosphere. In my free time I enjoy reading science fiction novels and films and have learned a lot about the different assumptions and visual styles and elements used when people talk about the universe, from realistic to technical, from retro to mysterious. Both content and form provide me with endless creative inspiration.
At work I provide design support for promotional materials for various products. Therefore, with different project needs, I need to accurately grasp the temperament and style of different projects and switch flexibly to meet the advertising needs of different products. Instead of focusing on a specific style, I chose a more comprehensive path and constantly expanded my design field. This experience also created good conditions for my logo design this time.

“First of all, it has to look good. This is the most fundamental task of a designer.”
My design philosophy is based on aesthetics. If it can’t attract the audience at all, no matter how many elements are forcibly added, it won’t help. I hope that my work is eye-catching and allows the audience to develop their own understanding during the appreciation process. This not only proves the attractiveness of the design, but also means that it can make the audience think. “Moving with the times” is another key element that I pursue. With the development of time, the aesthetic level of the audience is constantly improving. To ensure the effectiveness of artistic communication, I pay attention to the latest aesthetic trends and design styles and try to incorporate these elements into my own works so that I can communicate with the audience in a language that they recognize and ensures the accurate transmission of Information.

“Let the design have a story, let the design sense have a story.”
In recent years, the science fiction style has gradually returned to simplicity and restraint, no longer only featuring flashy and outlandish visual effects such as huge rockets, dazzling laser swords or magnificent and sophisticated spaceships. This shift has placed a renewed emphasis on humanistic emotions and inner exploration and has resulted in science fiction works being more deeply rooted in people’s hearts. If you delve into some unpopular works of science fiction, you will find that their plots are not about pursuing bizarre fantasies, but rather focusing on the expression of humanistic emotions. Therefore, I think that since it is difficult to achieve technological breakthroughs and innovations, when designing the mission logo, we might as well incorporate features from other areas, such as: B. the layered processing of illustrations, popular color choices or the addition of storytelling methods to touch people through these techniques and means. The emotional resonance deep within the heart inspires humanity’s shared emotional experience.

“What is the best popular science? A simple experience can cause a great shock.”
We should make the most of what the world itself has to offer us. On our manned space technology website you can see many beautiful photos of our country’s astronauts in space. These materials are of great value and can be distributed more deeply and widely. In fact, people’s longing and curiosity about space are often due to the shock brought by the deep starry sky and the endless universe. When we stand under the starry sky, we not only feel beauty, but also a touch from deep within. This type of experience can evoke human’s most primitive emotions and stimulate an endless interest in space exploration.
“The bridging function of designers is to make scientific research results accessible to more people in a way that has an impact on the public.”
Community-wide promotional activities, such as designing mission logos, are one way for the public to get truly involved. During the design process, developers will inevitably draw on a large amount of relevant information to deepen their understanding of all aspects of human spaceflight. For designers, this process not only helps improve their professionalism, but also brings more creativity and wisdom to the aerospace industry. I think logo design can be viewed as a systematic work of writing a small chronicle of the human spaceflight industry in a way that is easy for the public to understand. Perhaps most people are dedicated to the human spaceflight industry out of simple pride, but have little understanding of the specific content. Therefore, through systematic logo design and dissemination, the numerous launch missions carried out in this area and the specific content of each launch can be displayed to the outside world, gradually eliminating the mystery of the “far-distance” of aerospace and making it understandable to more people can and understand it. Understand the importance of human spaceflight.
I believe that every scientific researcher carries a unique world in their heart. He knows the technical difficulties that must be overcome behind every calculation and development, as well as the major goal that must be achieved in the end. However, they may not be able to say everything. As designers, we have a responsibility to convey their efforts and results in the most appropriate way so that the public can truly understand the magnitude of the aerospace industry. The collection of mission logos is just one aspect of the public’s close involvement and understanding of the human spaceflight project. I also firmly believe that it will be more diverse and humanely accessible to the public in the future.
