What an evening for Belgium on the slopes in Apeldoorn!
Fabio Van den Bossche opened the evening with a win in the pace race and elimination of the Omnium with a combination of smart and strong racing.
This means that our compatriot took over the top position of this omnium after three stages, after taking 5th place in the scratch earlier in the afternoon.
In the final points race we were shown a tactical race in which the favorites checked each other.
A controlled points race that is then decided in the sprints. And there Ethan Hayter showed his class by scoring a series of five-point shots.
He thus overtook Van den Bossche and secured the European championship title in the Omnium. Exhausted, the Belgian was no longer able to take part in the final sprint.
This led to a bronze award for 23-year-old Van den Bossche’s strong European title.
Earlier in the evening, Lotte Kopecky made cycling history by winning two gold medals in 20 minutes.
She controlled the points race confidently and was able to secure the European championship title at 7:55 p.m.
I enjoyed it for a moment, riding the rollers and quickly rushing to the start of the elimination where the other riders were waiting.
8:15 p.m. and Kopecky won his second gold medal. The unprecedented performance of our compatriot did not allow for any superlatives.
