Explosion rocks military base near Baghdad
A powerful blast has shaken a military base near Baghdad that houses members of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), with close ties to Iran. Although Israeli and US officials deny responsibility for the explosion, the incident raises concerns about escalating tensions in the region.
The PMF confirmed in a statement that the blast caused material damage and injuries, resulting in one PMF fighter’s death and six injuries. The United States Central Command affirmed that they had not conducted any airstrikes in Iraq on that day, while Israel denied involvement as well.
The Institute for the Study of War notes that PMP – a formal Iraqi security force – has been “infiltrated” by Iran and is used to “wield significant influence in Iraq.”
PMF groups have previously been responsible for numerous rocket and drone attacks on US forces in Iraq and Syria since last October.
The timing of this explosion is noteworthy as it follows an alleged limited strike carried out by Israel near Iran’s central city of Isfahan. This city is home to 2 million people as well as an underground uranium enrichment site. The reported airstrike was purportedly a response to last weekend’s missile and drone attack launched against Israel by Iran, which itself was retaliatory for the bombing of an Iranian diplomatic compound in Syria.
New challenges amidst ongoing conflicts
These incidents highlight several underlying themes within Middle Eastern conflicts. Firstly, there appears to be increasing evidence that Iran continues its covert operations through infiltration and use of proxy forces such as the PMF.
“Iran’s cooptation of the PMF enables Tehran to pursue its objectives in Iraq while obfuscating its actual involvement,” notes an analysis from think tank The Institute for the Study of War.
This subterfuge allows Iran to exert significant influence in Iraq without directly implicating itself in Iraqi internal affairs.
Secondly, the region becomes more volatile as attacks and retaliations escalate between Iran and Israel. The strikes near Isfahan, as well as the missile attacks against Israel, exemplify this growing tension. As both nations deny involvement in recent incidents, it raises questions about who is ultimately responsible for these acts of aggression.
Moving towards de-escalation
Given the potential consequences of further escalation in the region, it is crucial to explore diplomatic solutions that prioritize de-escalation over retaliation. Dialogue between involved parties should be initiated to ensure a peaceful resolution to conflicts and prevent additional suffering for civilians caught in the crossfire.
“The current situation demands an open channel of communication between all parties involved,” suggests Rachel Davis, a political analyst specializing in Middle Eastern affairs.
In addition to diplomatic efforts, international organizations and neighboring countries should play an active role in facilitating peace talks and promoting stability within Iraq. Recognizing Iraq’s sovereignty is essential for reducing external interference that fuels tensions within its borders.
Focusing on regional stability
Collective efforts are required from regional and global players alike to address root causes of conflict rather than perpetuating animosities through military engagements. Constructive engagement based on mutual respect is crucial when seeking long-term stability within a complex geopolitical landscape like the Middle East.
Ralph Thompson, an expert on international relations, emphasizes:
“It is imperative that world leaders prioritize de-escalation efforts by emphasizing diplomacy over military confrontation.”
Moving forward
As conflicts persist in the Middle East, it is crucial to remain aware of underlying motives and interests that drive these tensions. By recognizing the role of proxy forces like the PMF, there is an opportunity to address the broader issues at play and move towards sustainable peace in the region.
International collaboration, dialogue, and respect for national sovereignty should serve as guiding principles to prevent further violence and instability. Only through collective efforts can we hope to overcome these challenges and build a more peaceful future for both Iraqis and their neighboring countries.

Indian General Election Promises Disappoint LGBTQ+ Activists
In the general election for the lower house of the Indian parliament, which will be counted on June 4, the two major political parties promise to improve the lives of LGBTQ+ people (sexual minorities). But activists are disappointed, saying it’s just lip service that avoids the core issue of same-sex marriage. The photo shows students supporting same-sex marriage in New Delhi in October 2023. [New Delhi, Mehefin 16, Sefydliad Thomson Reuters]- India’s two major political parties are promising to improve the lives of LGBTQ+ people (sexual minorities) in India’s general election, which will be counted on June 4. But activists are disappointed, saying it is only lip service. avoid the core issue of same-sex marriage.
Despite advances in LGBTQ+ rights in India, homosexuality is still taboo, and many people hide their identity for fear of discrimination. Last year, the Supreme Court rejected an appeal to legalize same-sex marriage, citing a major obstacle to achieving equality.
Prime Minister Modi’s ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is expected to win a third term in power, opposes same-sex marriage. Meanwhile, the manifesto promises to increase the number of shelters for transgender people, give them national identity cards, and give them access to public health insurance.
The opposition National Congress Party has stated in its policy plan that it will introduce legislation to recognize same-sex civil unions and seek constitutional amendments to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation. However, he does not support same-sex marriage.
LGBTQ+ rights activists dismiss both sides’ promises as disappointing. The BJP has completely ignored gay, lesbian and bisexual people, and the Congress party has only made a vague proposal to allow same-sex civil unions after “extensive consultations”.
One activist, Noor Enayat, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation: “It’s all just lip service. We have a large voter base, and this is the most that both parties can offer.”
There is no official data on the size of India’s LGBT+ population, but the government estimates the number of homosexuals at 2.5 million. Rights activists say the real number is much higher.
It has been six years since the Supreme Court ruled that a colonial-era law banning same-sex sexual activity was unconstitutional. From depictions on television to the rise of LGBTQ+ people in politics to inclusive corporate policies, India’s LGBT+ environment has come a long way.
However, many people are still afraid to “come out.” Discrimination and abuse is rampant, blocking access to jobs, health care, education and housing.
Activists say discrimination against transgender people is even worse, with them shunned by their families and subjected to harassment and intimidation by the police.
An important ruling in 2014 legally recognized transgender people as a “third gender” and made them eligible for employment and acceptance, but a quota system has not yet been established.
Activists say there is an urgent need for policies to protect and include transgender people, especially those who often rely on begging or sex work to survive, given continued exclusion and poverty.
Transgender activist Grace Banu said that although homosexuals and bisexuals are often treated favorably in terms of education, employment, and family relationships, “We as transgender people need separate rights.
Polls predict that Prime Minister Modi’s BJP will win the election by a landslide. Gay activist Ankit Bhuptani said that the LGBTQ+ community must focus on winning the heart of the BJP. “Instead of confronting the BJP, we need to cooperate more,” he said.
