Once upon a time, Billy Mitchell was the best in the world, the king of Kong, the master of Pac-Man and, as he said, “the best video gamer in the world.” An argument that some have questioned, not least his many alleged records, which have been carefully examined in recent years by people familiar with the arcade scene, revealing a number of curiosities.
Lies and doubts have followed in his footsteps, both from his own mouth and from those who have chosen to side with Mitchell. The Donkey Kong record in particular was under scrutiny and was most likely created using the MAME emulator. This is strictly against the rules and was also one of the reasons (among other things) why Twin Galaxies eventually revoked their record.
Angry and offended, Mitchell quickly took several legal actions and over the past two years became notorious for threatening defamators with lawsuits. One of those lawsuits – the one against Twin Galaxies – ended today with a settlement between the two parties and the reinstatement of the record.
However, the exact details of the settlement remain secret, and now the focus shifts to Mitchell’s other big fight – the one against YouTuber Karl Jobst, who was one of the biggest pushbacks online against the alleged record holder, which now appears to be heading to court . In short, the rides continue and Mitchell will continue to fight as long as his legs and wallet carry him.
Do you think Mitchell is honest or is he a fraud?
Thanks, The Verge.
