As we get older, our ears seem to grow. Is this really true or a myth?
It’s not just wrinkles and folds that mark age, ears and noses also appear larger in older people. “This is not a myth,” says American surgery professor Alan Matarasso from the Zucker School of Medicine in New York.
Growing ears?
However, no growth of ear and nose tissue occurs during retirement years. Here’s the thing, says Dr. Matarasso told LiveScience: “Ears and nose are fully developed by the age of 20. The underlying structures of these organs are made of cartilage, a strong but flexible connective tissue that also protects bones and joints.”
A question of slack
“Age affects the structure of the tissue surrounding cartilage. For example, facial tissues that were once tense begin to relax as we age. Combined with the effects of gravity, this causes the earlobes to sag and the tip of the nose to droop.” Bigger ears with age? So it’s just a matter of calming down…
