Athirampuzha ∙ This year’s Athirampuzha was flimsy and sweet. For the first time in the history of Athirampuzha, after hoisting the flag, a cake was cut and distributed to the devotees. The cake, made in a small model of the church and its premises, filled the audience with awe and awe. The 80kg cake was donated to the owner of Athirampuzha Cake World by the Deputy Bishop of Changanassery Archdiocese, Mar Thomas Tharail, Vicar of Athirampuzha Forona, Fr. Joseph Mundakathil and others cut it and distributed it to the believers.

When everyone who came to Kodiyeten took a bite of the sweet and went downstairs, not many people asked about the story behind the cake. Those who knew the story said, “Punyalan will not give up if he prays hard, and that Punyalan is the truth that lives in Athirampuzha.” The cake distribution on the three-month day at Athirampuzha Church, which has witnessed thousands of miracles, was the end of another blessed year..!

The story behind the cake…
KR Anish, an Anish Bhavanil native of Mannar Kadampur, came to Kottayam 18 years ago. He was looking for day labor jobs in various bakeries. At first he was an assistant. He later devoted himself to cake making. During the apprenticeship there was only a meager income. Anish, who showed special interest in baking cakes, learned the job very quickly. Although Anish belonged to a different religion, he always came to Athirampuzha Church and prayed whenever he had time. He had a great desire to bake a cake modeled on the church and present it to the saint.

Such a wish was realized in 2009. But it will cost a lot of money. Anish, a daily wage laborer, was unable to do so. But even though this information was shared with some others, no one took it seriously or tolerated it. But he didn’t give up on his inner desire. He again promised Punyaal that he would bake a cake in the shape of a church and dedicate it to him if he had an existence of his own. Years passed. Meanwhile he looked for work in many shops. Now Anish has managed to open his own cake shop in Athirampuzha. That too in the church building! Anish says everything is saint’s blessing.

∙ A model was made in the mind’s eye and the cake reached Aimpuzha in one night
The model of the church and its surroundings was created without the help of images or documents. The big church, the small church, John Paul Nagar, the figures there, the garden, the flagpole, the church grounds, the parking lot, the church and its surroundings are a learning experience for Anish. This made it easy to make the model. The cake was made in a special room prepared by the church leadership. Anish said it was a blessing to be able to complete the work on the cake in one night and dedicate it to Punyal on the flag day itself.

∙ The church was approved and built in the church itself
Anish asked for permission to go to church to keep his promise to Punyalan. After hearing Anish’s stories, the church’s pastor, Fr. Dr. Joseph gave permission at Mundakam and prepared a place for making the cake. Now Anish has three stores including one in Athirampuzha. He lives with his wife Sri Parvathy in a rented house in Athirampuzha Kattathi. The dream is to build a house in the holy land of Athirampuzha. Furthermore, Anish says that he wants to present a cake every year on Flag Day and may the holy man give him the strength to do so.
