The 10 good reasons to celebrate/not celebrate April 25th
1. April 25th is the commemoration of a substantial historical falsehood: it is common opinion that 25 April 1945 was the liberation of Italy from fascism when in reality this ended two years earlier (25 July 1943) and even paradoxically with democratic methods through a motion of no confidence in the government presided over by Mussolini by the hierarchs of the Grand Council of Fascism.
2. Was the liberation from German occupation a liberation or rather a betrayal? Italy started the war alongside Germany and German troops were already in Italy to counter the Anglo-American invasion and lend support to our battered and recalcitrant army. In any case, Italy had entered the war alongside Germany by decision of a government expressing popular consensus.
3. Instead of April 25th, wouldn’t it be more logical to celebrate Armistice Day? That 8 September 1943 with which the new Badoglio government claimed to be recognized as an “ally” of what until the day before had been its enemy, with the splendid result of creating a bloody civil war, two different state entities in Italy (the Social Republic and the Southern Kingdom) and with Italy and the Armed Forces split in two?
4. April 25th is a partisan holiday also from a political point of view, therefore it can never be the holiday of all Italians. The partisan formations were distinguished by opposing political orientations: communist, socialist, of the Action Party, but also liberal, Catholic and monarchist formations; but in percentage terms they were a clear minority. So division and opposition were already present even in the Resistance camp: not exactly an anniversary of national unity.
5. April 25th is above all the anti-fascism holiday: if it must be recognized that anti-fascism was expressed with courage during the years of the fascist regime which reserved killings, beatings, castor oil, imprisonment and confinement for opponents, is it still an expression of courage today? Eighty years after the end of the regime, what is the point of being anti-fascists? Fascism is dead and buried and those who raise its specter usually do so for political gain by continuing to divide a people in the spirit of the good old divide and rule.
6. Celebrating April 25th is like rekindling hatred or reopening wounds; cultivate division among Italians. Every true patriot should intimately avoid celebrating fatal, tragic and controversial events in Italian history and perhaps more wisely put the fateful stone to rest.
7. Aren’t the true “fascists” of the third millennium even more so the anti-fascists? Aren’t these the ones who, if you don’t declare yourself anti-fascist first, have no right to speak?
8. April 25th will never be a true national holiday if in all the processions and demonstrations there will be mainly the waving of red flags. Fascism or the forms of government that were inspired by fascism no longer exist in the world: they ended with the Greek, Iberian and South American regimes, but on the contrary the communist regimes still exist, so, between the two, it is perhaps not, on the contrary surely it is more reasonable to be anti-communist?
9. The date of April 25 has become an electoral catchphrase for the right and the left (assuming it still makes sense to call them that). Every year we start talking a month before this anniversary which, falling in spring, precedes the political or administrative elections, so the parties stage the usual comedies. Isn’t it time to end it, move on and talk about the present instead of the past?
10. The greatest mystification then lies in the denial of legitimacy of post-fascism, when vice versa it was legitimized from the beginning and in the Constitution itself, which provided not only not to exclude former fascists from democratic participation, but even to allow, after a temporary exclusion, the eligibility of former fascists for offices in the republican state. So what is the point of continuing to ask the heirs of that political history to renounce a tradition that remains in the past, having already been examined by the anti-fascist founders of the Republic?
Well, a possible answer focuses on the same 10 points
1) Fascism obviously did not end on 8 September 1943: the PNF (National Fascist Party), dethroned with the arrest of Mussolini, was later succeeded by the PFR (Republican Fascist Party) in the RSI, which symbolically became extinct on 25 April 1945.
2) The betrayal, the real one, was perpetrated by fascism against Italy itself, dragging the nation into a suicidal war alongside two other criminal powers led by bloodthirsty psychopaths. Therefore, September 8 represented the attempt, albeit clumsy and late, to get rid not only of the fascists, but also of the Germans, who not surprisingly treated the Italians not as former allies, but (from their point of view) as traitors, therefore by enemies, including fascists, who were certainly not particularly esteemed by the Germans.
3) April 25th marked the victory of the Resistance; September 8th was certainly not a date worthy of the slightest celebration, in fact the opposite can certainly be said. The civil war was determined by the fascists’ insanity to pursue servitude to the Germans and the desire to continue the war, absurd and with no way out, as defeated.
4) April 25th is the holiday of Italy liberated from Nazi-fascist criminals: criminals who took away from Italy the democratic regime, therefore the freedoms of a Western country that Italy already possessed, in exchange for political murders, servitude to the Germans, imported anti-Semitism, rampant moral and material corruption, a war suicidal and above all a scoundrel. In addition to the obscene complicity with the genocide of Jews, the mass murders of Russians, prisoners of war, political opponents, homosexuals, sick people, and with the massacre of other Italians, primarily military personnel as in Kefalonia, at the Fosse Ardeatine and in hundreds of other mournful and often heroic cases; massacres of civilians, often of children, as in Marzabotto or Sant’Anna di Stazzema. The divisions in the Resistance camp do not erase the common effort for the anti-fascist struggle. Anyone who is fascist and doesn’t want to celebrate should stay indoors; on April 25th not all Italians are commemorated: those who opposed the fascists are commemorated.
5) Today it makes sense to be anti-fascists precisely because there are fascists who claim to be fascists. Fascism is therefore not dead and buried at all and not only does it disguise itself under other masks, but it still retains its own ones.
6) April 25 is rightly a divisive date not only because fascists still exist, but also because fascism is an eternal authoritarian temptation: pre-existing and later than fascism itself. Every true patriot should recognize the value of the end of the fascist regime, which despite having had its successes in twenty years of government, still ultimately led Italy to DISASTER and slavery first to the Germans and then to the Anglo-American victors : a sentence that we are still serving today, and that especially at this moment we see in all its tragic weight.
7) No, the true fascists of the third millennium are obviously first and foremost the fascists, old and new; even if above all Stalinist communism had and has similar characteristics. In fact, fascism and communism were and are dictatorships. It is worth remembering that Popper’s paradox requires by law to prevent those who are truly fascists (or Stalinists, de facto) from exercising the possibility of imposing their fascist actions. If, on the other hand, ideas are irrepressible, including fascist ones, a democratic society cannot tolerate those who want to destroy democratic society to impose an authoritarian dictatorship.
8) April 25th is a democratic holiday and therefore anyone can demonstrate, except fascists, because the fascists would have prevented and are preventing the demonstrations; the communists would also have done it if they had taken power in ’46/’48, but vice versa they are recognised, like the Russian communists, the value of the anti-fascist struggle, and like the Chinese communists the value of the fight against the hyper-fascist Japanese regime. Therefore the value of anti-fascism is prevalent compared to that of anti-communism.
9) Evidently it is a catchphrase that makes sense, given that the fascists try to avoid recanting and mumbling lunar reasons to justify still being fascists. To move on, we need to have the courage to no longer have ambiguity on the topic. Gianfranco Fini succeeded by founding the first post-fascist and no longer pseudo-fascist party, heir to the Italian Social Movement; while Giorgia Meloni’s party has returned to a post-fascism that winks at the nostalgic.
10) If it is true that the former fascists were readmitted into the democratic framework, it is true that they were readmitted in exchange for the substantial tacit condition of defeated and marginalized not only from the roles of institutional political leadership, but also substantially from society as a whole. The former fascists were granted a sort of Indian reservation with the weight of blame shared by the enormous majority of the country; a blame that today has first been partly overcome and then partly even almost forgotten. Giorgio Almirante, whose teachings have been forgotten too quickly, asserted an explanatory formula of the MSI’s philosophy: do not deny and do not claim. Today we can understand that once they have arrived in government as a relative majority force, the temptation of the post-fascists to shit outside the box comes a little spontaneously, but forgetting that fascism dragged Italy into shame and international discredit becomes something more than an oversight: it becomes a green light for subsequent authoritarian attitudes which are already often implemented by governments of the fake left, let alone those of the real right. Someone even famous called it, with a slightly learned Germanic term, “URFASCISM”, or something similar to an ancestral fascism; perhaps a more suggestive definition than sensible: the violent authoritarian drift has existed since the dawn of time even without the Black Shirts, evidently.
Every 25 April, it simply makes sense to oppose that model, in favor of a very imperfect democratic model, probably rotting today, but still better than hearing a Duce tragicomically waving his arms from a balcony. He said it in a famous stentorian voice: WIN! And they lost, badly.
