France – The winters follow each other and are similar… While the indicators for bacterial respiratory infections, bronchiolitis, flu or SARS-CoV-2 are red, at the same time the serious antibiotic shortages observed last year are back.
On December 21, the ANSM therefore gathered representatives from patient associations, health professionals from cities and hospitals, and pharmaceutical chain stakeholders to take stock of the situation.
The observation: “Since the implementation of our winter plan in the fall, significant difficulties have been observed in the distribution of boxes of amoxicillin and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, making access for patients very difficult.”
The situation is particularly tense in pharmacies, especially for drinkable forms used in pediatrics, “despite existing stocks declared at the industry level”.
Consequently, the ANSM called on manufacturers to “immediately make the majority of their stocks available to wholesalers and distributors so that cartons are fairly distributed in pharmacies and positioned as close to patients as possible.” Currently, cartons of amoxicillin and amoxicillin -Clavulanic acid delivered to wholesalers who will ensure equitable distribution throughout the territory.
The Authority also recalls that pharmacists always have the option of directly dispensing a compound preparation suitable for children under 12 years of age if amoxicillin-based medicines are not available.
Finally, everyone involved reminds “how important it is to use antibiotics correctly” and to avoid excessive and unjustified use of antibiotics.
At this time, medicines for fever, asthma and oral corticosteroids are not subject to supply restrictions, the ANSM said.
