$6 million was raised on Kickstarter for development, and the device is already available, with which we can charge an electric car in the event of a power outage or run our home for days. The device is also so mobile that we can take it with us.
The Anker Solix F3800, a versatile and portable battery, shipped earlier this year after a successful $6 million Kickstarter campaign, The Verge reports. The device is suitable both for meeting the energy needs of a weekend trip and as a good security solution in case we are surprised by a prolonged power outage in our home. The Solix F3800 is priced at $3,999 and general sales begin on January 9th.
The base unit, a 3.84 kWh battery unit, can be expanded to 26.9 kWh by adding six 3.84 kWh BP3800 LFP expansion batteries. The device offers up to 6000W dual voltage (120V/240V) AC output and is capable of powering a variety of home appliances including air conditioners and water pumps. For higher power requirements, two F3800 units can be connected together, providing 12,000 W of power and a total capacity of 53.8 kWh.
The Verge article adds that the average American household used about 29.2 kWh per day in 2022, meaning a fully expanded Anker system could power a home for about two days or more using only basic tools would be used. The energy consumption of a private household in 2022 was significantly lower: the average daily consumption was only 7 kWh, which means that this device would last even longer here.
Portable like a suitcase with a telescopic handle and wheels, the F3800 can be connected to a solar panel of up to 2400W, essentially giving us a 60kg mobile solar generator that can be useful for RVs, boats or even smaller homes. In fact, it can even be used to charge electric vehicles with 6000 W / 240 V.
In addition to focusing on the F3800 itself, Anker offers the product in various configurations, all varying in price and complexity (by definition), essentially offering different levels of control over your home’s circuits.
Unfortunately, the premium Solix F3800 Home Power Kit is currently only available in the US and includes the battery itself, additional electrical components, and the Anker Home Power Panel for battery backup and automatic circuit switching. The device is therefore also able to store energy from existing solar modules on the roof, but the system cannot feed excess electricity back into the grid.
Cheaper than the premium version is the Home Backup Kit, which contains a 120 V/240 V switch that can supply power to 10 circuits, so that the Solix F3800 and all expansion modules can be used directly with various home networks up to classic generators can supply electricity. Unlike the Home Power Kit, the Home Backup Kit requires manual intervention if we want to switch the power supply to our circuits to the Solix F3800 battery unit.
Anker plans to launch an even more powerful home backup solution in 2024 that can be mounted on a wall like Tesla’s Powerwall.
